I once got a merc engine for free from a friend. It was a fresh rebuild that he boiled over on his test run years before and cracked the block real good. The part I wanted was the 4" stroke crank. It was in perfect shape so I used it in a 59 ab build I was doing. If the crank is good, that alone is worth $. My engine went in a 38 tonner that was my dd and worked hard in my business, towing, hauling way too much. The 4" stroke made a big difference in the low end torque. Try to get it cheap and put it on ice. You would never regret having it in a flathead. Always ran the 3 bolt carbs too.

$500 will get you a good running flattie if you're patient. The Merc crank and heads would be worth $200 if they're in good condition, and that would be my top dollar, too. But since you offered that and were turned down, you're better off moving on. You could always ask him how much farther he's going to let it sink into the ground waiting for the $500, then restate your offer, but that's up to you.

I was also going to mention the 4" crank. However, I'd probably pay up to $300 just to get the crank.

My 1950 f1 has a 53 Merc flathead out of a car. Converted to wide belt truck water pumps, and an 8ba intake with a Holley 94. I have the Merc intake and four-bolt carb (most of it anyway!) but it seems like the Holley was the right choice, since I just rebuilt it with a readily available overhaul kit.

Good luck on your search, Flatties rock!

It seems awkward, but whenever you "insert a picture" to one of these threads, the forum is looking for the picture somewhere on the web (which is always available) rather than from somewhere on your hard drive (which isn't always available).

Go to Image hosting, free photo sharing & video sharing at Photobucket and sign up for a free account. Then create an album for your truck. Upload any pics you want to post on FTE to that album. Have this album open on your computer when you want to post pics on FTE.

While you're making a post on FTE, select the pic you want to post from your Photobucket album. When the large version of the pic is open, right mouse click on it and select "View Image Info". The image info will be highlighted and will look something like this:
http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...ghtsafter1.jpg

Copy that highlighted info (right click / copy).

When you have the spot in your post where you want the pic to be placed, select the "Insert Image" icon at the top of the post (looks like a mountain) and paste (right click / paste) the image info you copied in the highlighted box (just shows "http://" when it opens).

Your pic will be placed in the post.

Hope that helps.
