So I've been looking at custom bumpers....

And I'm confused. Beside looking good, what does a 2k bumper do for me? I only want one to look good, you know be kind mean and off-road looking. Can someone 'splain' what spending 2k (or more) on an off road bumper does for me?

Check out mine. It is a ranchhand and looks great I think. It was 450. I like it better than any I have seen.

I mean the front bumper though... Not a brush guard. Yours does look good though.

Protects the engine compartment in case something jumps in front of you.

We had Road Armor in Iraq. Saved our tails many times. In an accident with just about anything else on the road, you win and drive away with just some scratched paint.

Is there an option for the look without the price? As much as I'd like to think I'll go off road sometime, or run down zombies... Most likely it'll go to the mall

This one runs around $1000.00

Check around, if you don't want the winch you can usually get some in the $800-$900 range. You could also go Warn. Just do a google for a superduty bumper, you usually get more results than if you do one for the Excursion.

You get better metal, and more of it.

You get good design.

You get a tough as nails bumper that will hit a deer and laugh.

You get a properly deigned winch mount that can handle it.

In other words, you get a bumper made for real work, and not a facimile.

But,

If you are wanting a mall crawler and just want the look, then the 2k may or may not be justified. That question can only be answered by you and your desires.

Like everything, it's a compromise.
  • Lightens your wallet
  • Makes your X heavier
  • Makes your X longer than it already is.
  • Withstands impacts better than a factory bumper.
  • Transfers impact energy to the frame of the X.
  • Will outlast the X, you, your kids, your grandkids, and possibly their kids.

Just my 2 cents.........
There was a horrifying high speed crash a couple of days ago....
It turns out that a man wanted to commit suicide and he steered his car
into a station wagon of a family...
He died......ok
.....but kills a wife and two children.
The driver and his daughter survived but are now disabled and sit from now in wheelchairs.

I bet the driver looks now total different to a oversized winch bumper......
Remember, maybe you need this bumper only one second in your live,
hopefully never......but, if you really need it, you will think, that this
bumper was the best $2000 investment of your live......
Believe me..........

Looks like you did understand my message.......
Maybe those family helps to survive your family.......
Think about it......
BTW........spend another $2000 for the rear..........
You never know, how many hours this truckdriver sat behind the steering.

Take care, King David

I understood. And it makes plenty of sense... Just felt like Debbie Downer on my light hearted discussion about expensive bumpers. But you're right, it's worth it for the protection.

That wasnt my intention to let you feel bad......Sorry for that, pal.....
but sometimes you need a shock to set your view straight back.
Of course, if you equipped your car with those bumpers including a heavy winch
you should be aware of your own responsibility to other people.
These things arent toys to proll around with, you can kill someone, too
Thats the opposite of the dime.
...but if youre a defensive and good driver it should more protect yourself and your family then being a intimidation to other.

I laughed at all the trucks I saw in Colorado until I saw one without the Cattle Bumper off a train. His truck was wasted from a tiny deer. As a mall crawler you can make your truck an Armor Car with all the plating and such then as you get out of the car at the mall get sideswiped by a weak suicide attempt. Do it for the purpose you want not in case of some idiot or apocalypse. There are plenty of cool bumpers that will save your hide. My Ex has a sub-frame piece behind the bumper mounted under the radiator. It took a hit at 25MPH by the prior owner. Front of the truck is still good but the bumper and sub needs replacing. At 45-85 little will help as the other car can skip and climb the hood. I worked traffic for a few years and saw many fatals over 45MPH. Semi drivers as well as minivans all passed from the collision. You own a truck. it will far better from head ons than most all cars. Side impacts and roll overs are more fatal in the Ex than a head on stock. Make the Ex stable so it will not roll and your family will be safe.
