A few questions on a motor swap

I have a 57 F100 that the 272 gave up on me. I have access to a 95 F150 that has everything there but it is a 5 spd 4X4. The price is right to buy it but I am uncertain of the process needed to convert the 4X4 to 2X4 for my 57. Anyone have any knowledge of what it would take? I would like to keep it a standard just out of nostalgia and I am not finding any other local deals on a motor and tranny combo. My 57 is no show queen it is a truck that is used as a truck should be, and that is why I am leaning toward the F150 because I know it was a towing truck prior to the frame getting bent.

If I left out details or did not mention something let me know. Oh and I will convert it over to Carb because I don't want to jack with the EFI and wiring. Just a pain in the tail.

Why not rebuild the 272?

Well, the motor needs to be gone through and with winter coming on fast I would like a quick swap. But after posting this I came a across a freshly built 292 so I am trying to work a deal on that. I really would like to keep a Y in it but this SBF is right across the street taunting me. And it is a 5 spd, which I like. Who knows, I have been told just run it without a transfer case connected, but if this 292 pan out then I might be ok.

If your looking to get back on the road quick with a dependable DD, I say go for the 292.
Thats just my opinion and it should be yours. LOL But feel free to use your own judgment!
Good luck in your quest.

Installing an engine that isn't stock replacement can be a tremendous amount of work. Mounts, crossmember, fuel connections, wiring , exhaust..........It can be well worth it and a lot of fun if you are looking for something specific in your build, but just to get the old girl back on the road, I'd go with the tried and true 292 for sure. my .02

Well as of about an hour ago I'm up a creek, that motor is gone. And I'm not finding a motor shop locally that will rebuild my 272 heads.

On the 95, the transfer case is bolted to the transmission. Just unbolting it would not work. You would need a transmission that has the end (extension ) housing.

The engine and trans from the 95 are mounted completely differently than the 272, so you would have to make or buy adaptors to mount it in your truck. Then you have the issue of needing a speedometer gear - the 95 transmission does not have that.

All is doable, but can take time and effort.

I don't know about the Op reasons but I hardly ever rebuild an engine. The reason is, I can find real good running used engines for about 10-15% of what it costs to have one rebuilt right, even doing the assembly myself.
On the 95, I would look to trade the 4x4 transmission/transfer case for a 2wd transmission.

What HE said... A lot of guys are going the other way these days, you know, 4wd. Your 4wd stuff should be marketable.

I don't have the 4x4 I just have a 57 with a 272 yblock. I might have found a local builder who is up for the head job and he is very reasonable. It just the past few below 30 temps that are starting to make me freak a little. That temp is cold on a Triumph at 7 am

Sounds like you need a work beater so you can get the stuff done to the 57.
