7.3l Ex Limited w/310k, should I bite?

<HR style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffffff; COLOR: #ffffff" SIZE=1> <!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->
Hey everyone,

I've been shopping for a 7 seater with some decent gas milage and maybe room for dogs in the future and school buses are too expensive, heh. Would love to get a 7.3l Ex and I may have a chance now...but wanted to get your input...

A good mechanic friend of mine that owns his own shop, and a former ASE Ford Mech has a friend with a 2001 Ex Limited 4x4 7.3 w/310k. The interior and leather seats are in great condition, no cracking in the leather. They have never towed with it, mom drove it to shuttle kidos. He only wants about 5-6k for it, should I ****** it up or wait for something else, it seems like a great deal for a 7.3l.

There has been no mods and the front end was rebuilt by my buddy about 3 yrs ago. This would not be a daily driver but would get a fair amount of use with 7 of us on weekends.

thx

The fact that a buddy owned it would make me feel more comfortable buying it with the higher mileage

Can you find out if anything has been done to the transmission (service history, repairs, or replacement)?

Oh, and welcome!!

I saw a similar one on CL. Had similar miles but the body needed some work. I considered looking at it and maybe buy it, repair the body and then flip it.

thanks for all the input so far!

Well my buddy is looking it over today, not too worried about the transmission, He's got 9 of them in his shop, its one of his main specialties. I know the guy selling it and hes always good about upkeep. My buddy said if we had to rebuild the trans down the road he would have John Wood build the stall converter and we would beef up the trans total about $1800-2000.

After hours of reading the forums this would be a great frame of a vehicle to build on. So about 90% sure I'm going to grab it, ill post some pics when I see it tomorrow.

That's cheap! But remember sometimes being mechanic owned isn't all that good. It's like the old saying, If your a landscaper and want to see your work look at the house across the street.

Kdr358, I agree, I'm in IT and I never have enough motivation to write my own applications or work on my own equipment. Then again I run 15-20 person LAN parties a lot which keeps me busy.

I think I wrote my op a little confusing, a friend of my tech buddy has the excursion and my buddy has worked on all this guys cars, he has too many cars and this was the one to go since his four daughters are grown. Really cool and honest guy otherwise I prob wouldnt consider it.

For a rig with that many miles, I would probably just keep a rainy day fund available. Not saying that to ruffle feathers, but as things age and gather up more miles, the chances of something needing to be replaced with go up. Other than that, if it runs and drives fine, get it!

310k is not bad for that diesel engine. But be aware all other parts may not fair the same. That's a lot of miles on drivetrain.
