97 f250 elctrical Gremlins
I have been reading this forum for sometime. I've always found very useful info. on all if my Ford trucks, but------, this truck as got me stuck. 97 F-250 Ld 4x4, 5.4 motor, E40D tranny.
When I purchased it awhile back I knew it had some electrical issues, but nothing seems to be getting any better with every part I install.
Symptoms-
1.4x4 low light flashes occasionally. Doesn't seem to be a set sequence or pattern. Usually when the brake pedal is depressed or right after the drivers window quits working.
2.Drivers window goes up and down fine until the transmission is put in a forward or reverse gear. Then it goes up and down 3-4 times, then there is a click at the relay and it only goes up, not down. Put the tranny in N or P and it works again like nothing happened. Craziest **** I've ever seen. Passenger window works fine all the time.
3.Radio does not work. It lights up and thinks its working with no sound. It's not factory which as me concerned something isn't right behind it. I'll be pulling that tonight as that's the only place I haven't looked for an open to ground condition. I've been told that if anything that runs through the GEM module goes bad in makes the GEM act crazy.
4. 4x4 was not engaging, hi or low. Turning the dash switch to hi turned the light on but when 4x4 low light would come on it would shut 4x4(high light off).
I'm the second owner and don't have much of a history on the truck. So, I started with most obvious and well documented issues with these models.
1. Ordered and replaced the GEM with a new factory model. The one I pulled out was made in 2001 and should have been the updated model but I changed it anyway. The result was no change in any of the above symptoms.
2.Replaced the DTR with a new one from Ford. 4x4 now works and stay's engaged even when the 4x4 low light kicks on and off.
3. Checked all fuses in the interior and main electrical box. All where fine.
Any help would be appreciated....

Narrowing it down maybe.
When in gear and operating the window switch----- after 3-5 up/down cycles the relay clicks and "holds", almost like it's stuck. after a few seconds without touching anything it clicks again and the 4x4 light illuminates for a second, acc. relay clicks again. The window doesn't go down until you move the transmission into park or neutral, or go from R to D passing neutral or vise versa.
All relays have been replaced and switched with others with no change.
Could it possibly be the interior Fuse box?
What would be the best test/trace to determine if it's the fuse box?

Update.
Replaced all of the relays in the interior fuse panel. All was normal besides the radio for about 10 miles, then------a click from the battery saver relay-4x4 low light flash-and no drivers window function. Shut it off, removed the relay. No interior lights or windows but the radio came on.
Why no windows or dome light with the battery run down relay out?
Replaced the relay-radio still works but windows, 4x4 light still flash a quit working until you shift into neutral or park. Flasher/Signal relay on the right side of the column ticks now.

Yea, crazy. Radio hasn't worked since I bought it. Pulled relay 1 & 2 which killed the interior lights and batt. saver--speakers start to work. Replaced the relay's and the radio still works. Now the signal relay clicks sometimes. You'll be driving along and it will start clicking like the signal is on.
