Are the Tires To Big?

I have a opertunity to pick up a set of tires and wheels but I don't know if they will fit under the fenders. They are 265/75/16's, they are 31.5 inches tall and mounted on 8" wide wheels with a 4" backspace. I have a 48 F1 with a stock front end except for a disk brake conversion and I have added Toyota power steering. Not sure if they will look right and if the tires on the front may just be to big. any advise would help, thanks

Will the guy selling them let you bolt them on to see if they fit before you buy them? If he's any kind of reasonable, he should. My personal thought is they'll be too big. The stock 6.00x16 are similar in height to a 235-75x15. I think your tires would be closer to a 7.50x16, which would be more at home on an F2-3 than an F1. But i could be all wrong. The best thing to do, obviously, would be to try them out and see what you think. It really will depend on the look you want. If you're trying to stay closer to stock, they'll be way too wide, if nothing else.

I wish that I was closer to the seller but he is about 100 miles away. These tires are almost 3" taller than a 235/75/15 and an inch wider section width. The wheels were Crager s/s's, which is the wheel that I want, however I don't think that they make the 16's anymore so if I ever need a replacement wheel I am pretty much screwed. It was a great deal but maybe not so great.

Hey Chuck,
Hmmm... Here is a link to a wide ranging tire/wheel discussion
we had regarding our 1950 F1. It's not apples to apples as we have a mustang II front end so it's lower than your stock set up.

I'll just say - we are running 255-45-18's - that's 27 inches in diameter with a 10 inch width & that doesn't work for us. We've got rubbing up front & have had to use spring spacers to keep from hitting the fenders on large dips. Can't get it aligned, etc.. The advice given us was to go with 215-45-18's which are 25.6 inches in diameter & 8.5 inch width. I haven't done it yet.

I'd say you should be ok on width at 8 inches - we were running fatter tires than that on our stock axle. 31.5 inches tall sounds challenging -
let's see if someone will chime in who is running a stock front axle on their '48-'50.

Good luck over there.

That is the same size that I run on my super duty F 250.......lt265/75/16. Those tires are huge, I just mounted my winter tires on some extra wheels today. About killed my poor old tire machine (and me!). No way those will fit under an F-1....

If you can get them really cheap, buy em and use the wheels with the correct size tire.....sell the big tires?

I don't think they will fit. A friend has them shoehorned into a 71 Chevy C20 and they barely fit (no clearance for bumps, etc). I am pretty sure our fender openings are smaller still.

I had a set on my 4x4 cummins dodge and they fit ok though.

You guys are all right, there just too big. After a lot of thought I think that I will just stick to my original plan and pass on this deal. What I was planning on doing is 225/70/15 on 7" wheels for the front and 255/60/15 on 8" wheels for the rear. The tires would be Radial TA's and Crager SS Wheels. Color gets shot on the cab the end of this week and I am a good year away from having it on the road so I guess that I will just save my penny's and get what I really want.

Those sizes sound much more doable...

I like your choice. I have 255/60/15 on 8" rims in the back and they look like they belong there. No clearance issues.
