Anyone who can tell med where the hi-beam relay is located on my 2000 Ex 6.8 l

 

According to my 2000 Ford Excursion EVTM manual there is no relay for the headlamps for either the low or high beams, each is supplied voltage from the Mutl-Function switch on the steering column. There is a separate fuse for the High Beam circuit located in the Central Junction Box, Fuse 16.

I have checked the fuse located under the panel inside the car. I am not sure if this is what you mean by the "central junction box", or is this the box at the rear end of the engine?

I can flash my High beam pulling the viper handel, but they wil not turn on pushing it into forward position.

Note that sometimes the high beam filament will fail before low beam, which seems kinda backward...

I have read of a few guys who have replaced all the headlight wiring with heavier gauge and report brighter lights. Not related to your specific situation, but I just felt like sharing.

 

Have you checked the multi-function switch itself? The high beam part of the bulbs work, the wiring works, so I'm pretty sure the only thing left is the MFS.

The CJB(Central Junction Box) is the main fuse box under the steering column.

 

Multifunction Switch

Removal and Installation

1. Remove the ignition switch lock cylinder.
   1. Insert the ignition key into the lock cylinder and turn to the RUN position.
   1. Push the ignition switch lock cylinder release tab with a punch while pulling out the ignition switch lock cylinder.

1. If equipped, twist the tilt wheel handle and shank and remove.

1. Remove the upper and lower steering column shrouds.
   1. Remove the screws.
   1. Remove the upper and lower steering column shrouds.

1. Remove the multifunction switch.
   1. Remove the screws.
   1. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
   1. Remove the multifunction switch.

1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

 

Thanks rla2005, that does not sound to complicated. I think the issue is th MFS. Removed fuse 16, and everything was dead. With the fuse in place, twigeling the MFS I managed to turn the hi-beam on.

 

I would agree based on your test result comments.

 

I replaced the Multi-Function Switch, but that did not resolve the problem. I am running out of ideas now, so all help is highly appreciated!

I can flash the high beam, but not turn they permanent on pushing the MFS forward. I have checked the fuse 16 and it seems to be OK. If I remove it I can not flash the high beam. I can only flash the high beam when the main switch for the head light is turned on.

 

Terminal 12 is hot when the MFS is in the High Beam position. Terminal 13 is hot when the MFS is in the Low Beam position. Terminal 15 is supplied power through the Main Light Switch via Fuse 10 in the battery junction box. Terminal 15 supplies power for Low and High Beam operation.

Fuse 10 also supplies power to Terminal 196 on the MFS. When using the Flash function the MFS routes power from Terminal 196 to Terminal 12.

The path for High Beam/Flash is exactly the same from the MFS Terminal 12 to the headlamps. If there was a problem with the MFS main power input, Terminal 15, then you would have issues with both the low and high beams not working.

It's time to break out a meter to verify the "new" MFS is good. Hard to believe two in a row would be bad.

Terminal 12: Gray/Orange wire
Terminal 13: Red/Black wire
Terminal 15: Red/Yellow wire
Terminal 196: Dark Blue/Orange wire

There IS a relay. It is part of the central junction box (fuse ox under dash)

Those diagrams you posted are for an '02, I am not sure if the OP's 2000 is the same. Plus I do not see a relay for the High Beams in said diagrams. There is one for the fog lamps, but not High Beam. The second diagram does mention a relay for the Daytime Running Lamps (DRL), but nothing for the High Beam.

Perhaps I cannot see the forest through the trees?
