Exclamation 03 SD Engine check light

Hi There
have been trying to track down a intermitant problem on my 7.3 . Some days when driving it goes into idle mode without warning and the engine check light comes on , if I drop me foot off the gas and accelerate again engine check light goes off and most times it will accelerate again. The other day it did it on start up and refused to accelerate at all. Parked it up in disgust , went out next morning started and ran fine , never touched a thing ?????? Very frustrating Would really appreciate some help as this has happened on more than one occassion and the bride is getting a bit spooked by it all
Thanks
Brownie

The code will likely point to the issue if you can get it read. But my first guess is the ivs(idle validation switch) you can remove the pedal assembly and try cleaning it all with electronics cleaner.

I will expand on Alan's post.
The gas pedal needs to come all the way up and hit the Idle Validation Switch(IVS) so that the truck knows that it needs to idle. From the IVS position it also knows at what resistance to start advancing the resistance for throttle position all the way to Wide Open Throttle(WOT). If the IVS is not making/turning on when you let go of the gas pedal then it never resets and knows where the resistance is for the rest of the pedal position. I hope this helps you.

Thanks for the help

Thanks for that , have found an auto electrician with the correct scan tool and yes it did come up with faults in the tps and waste gate solinoid
Have replaced the waste gate solinoid $215.00 and the pedal assembly $312.00 today and will see how it runs this week

I would have never replaced the WG solenoid until it did it again after the TPS and IVS were replaced. Were these parts purchased from the local Ford Dealer?
Did you install them or did some shop charge you an arm and a turkey leg to do it?
That is EGGGG spensive. More than likely that WG solenoid was just fine and just tripped code because IVS/TPS was an issue.
Did you save the WG solenoid?? It is probably still good.

You know if you put your location up that someone with a scanner could help you for a reasonable rate like a 12 pack.
Is it at least running correctly now?
Please Advise

Hi There,
Thanks for the input , i tried taking the pedal out and cleaning with CO cleaner , made sure there was no grud stopping the pedal returning to idle, refitted, made no difference so removed pedal again and sanded a little of the plastic so pedal could return further, no change , then took it to be scanned. I Put the WG solinoid on a multi meter and it was buggered , when new one arrived I removed the old one and compared the two ...... old one was no good .

Would luv to shout some beers for it to be scanned ( so long as I get to help ) but I am in New Zealand and have found this forum to be so helpful in keeping me truck on the road , especially when it spat the oil line out of the HPOP, had to order a new from from Austrailia for $1450.00nz.

and yes she is running better at the moment thanks

Hi There,
Yep sure is, all on the correct side of the road here

And we are upsidedown and FYI our toilets flush the other way

What I really need is a parts supplier in the good Ole USA that can
ship parts over to me .......... like a scanner etc.all would be paid before purchase and shipping

I should mention that she has done 575000 Km I spose I should convert it
for them that are not metric yet so a few problems are starting to appear
Keep Havin Fun and lets stay in touch

I like the Aeroforce Scangauge for a gauge/scantool combo. This fits in a standard gauge hole and can display any parameter the engine monitors as well as read/clear DTC's AND do Buzz Test and CCT. With additional senders, it can also give you EGT and Fuel Pressure. I almost never break out the AutoEnginuity for my own trucks anymore! The AF gauge is $100 less than AE - and its 'always on' - no need to bust out the laptop, wait for it to connect, etc.

I also have a ScanGauge II. This will also display almost everything AE can, but can be found for ~$125 here. I have also used this on LOTS of other OBDII vehicles to read/clear DTC's.

As far as sending stuff down there, I'd be happy to help. Just lemme know what ya need.

Not enough coffee yet to come up with a good poke about the other side of the equator - but I'll think of something and save it for next time!!

Thumbs up

Hi There ,

Thanks so much for the offer I really appreciate it.
The good news is that the truck is going better than it ever has , gear changes much smoother, more acceleration and power , very happy

I am very interested in purchasing a scan tool as the auto electricians down here charge $100.00 to hook up the scanner and then $75.00 per hour to diagnose any faults ....... they are not shy

I also require a front park lamp or a pair ( I can send you Photo's )

My email address is geoffshed@yahoo.co.nz so we can discuss bank A/c numbers or are you a company that could accept visa.

As our national icon is the Kiwi bird that is flightless and only comes out at night, I am sure you could make something with that info after a few fizzy coffee's. e.g what do most Kiwi's do at night ?? = he eats, roots , shoots and leaves
Keep havin fun and lets stay in touch
