1966 F100 Custom Radiator questions

Ok,
So my truck (1966 f100 custom) has a 428 in it.... Sadly it had been sitting for approximately 15 years.... That being said the radiator is unable to be boiled or roded out due to the damage to the headers from sitting for so long. That being said it's a built big block..... and the current radiatior is a 4 row. I opted to go with a 4 row high efficiency radiator custom made by usradiator (U.S. Radiator | The Difference Is In The Tooling That being said the owner of US radiator advised that I consider either A finding a shroud that fits over the current fan or buy an electric fan with shroud and place in place of the current fan. That being said I'm concern about where to mount it. He also recommended that I run a transcooler for the tranny lines and don't run them into the radiator at all. I have attached a picture of the current setup. What I am looking for is advice on if my current fan should be sufficient with a 4 row radiator or if I need a shroud (I don't know why I'll need that all of a sudden when in the past I have had no issues...)
#2: What transcooler would you guys recommend and where would be the best place to mount it?
Thanks,

ffjake, You have been spoon fed a bucket of hooey. The 428 is the largest of the FEs but is no fire breathing monster. It is 38 cubic inches larger inside than a 390 (same size on the outside) that many here run in their trucks, will sit in the same spot and everything bolt up to where the 352 that came in the truck was connected.

I had to go back and re-read 3 times about header damage trying to figure what the hello one had to do with the other, and could not.

You have a nice hi-dollar radiator now so enjoy it. The folk there may know their rads but they don't know these trucks. Electric fans are needed with AC added and when a lot of sitting still idling is done.

As long as these trucks are moving forward 20 mph you can chuck the fan, but not moving is another story. I have been around these trucks all their lives, & know a few of their characteristics.

Try running the truck as is, you can always add more fans & shrouds later.

Thanks, by header damage I mean The headers of the radiator were damaged and too weak to repair from sitting for so long...
The truck should not just be sitting and idling too much and the AC is a whole separate piece as its almost independent from the truck. All the pieces from the AC are off of a 60's mustang. That being said I will try it with the current setup and see how it goes..... Any advice on the transcooler?
Thanks.

Use a remote one like a B&M. the one depicted will be more than enough.
B&M 70264 B&M SuperCooler Transmission Coolers

Are you sure the engine is a 428? All FEs look similar with the 428 having an added wing weight to the front crank snout as it is externally balanced.

The only 428 that got the hatchet behind balancer was the SCJ. All other 428's did not have the extra weight. Flywheel yes, behind balancer no.

Stop and go traffic or much idling and you will need a shroud.

Sorry Boss, but I haven't needed one 45+ years of driving.

yes and you do not have a 428! I suppose in alaska you may not need one but one is surely needed here unless you have aftermarket aluminum radiator or one for a 460.

Car show today with my 65, all stock. It was running warmer than I like (200+) when stopped idling for extended periods. Needs a shroud PERIOD!

FoMoCo did not offer a fan shroud for these trucks, but there is one that will bolt right on without any mods required...as long as the radiator has its original dimensions.

Had my 1965 F100 352 2 row radiator changed to a 4 row in 1981, then looked at dozens of new fan shrouds (at Crenshaw Motors, the 2nd largest parts stocking dealer on the planet), to see if one would fit.

D3TZ-8146-C (replaced C8TZ-8146-K) .. Fan Shroud / Marked at upper left corner: C8TA-8146-S or D3TA-8146-DA / Available from Carpenter, specs listed on same page as shroud in his 1967/79 truck repro parts catalog.

Original applications: 1968/76 F100/350 360/390 with standard, xtra cooling & A/C radiators. Not used with Super Cooling radiator.

It depends where the original poster lives. Living here in AZ; I regularly see temps over 110* and the stock setup does not work. I run a 70/30 mix of antifreeze, the obsolete shroud that ND listed above, an aluminum radiator w/plastic tanks from Performance Radiators of Phoenix and a Ford OE 7 blade clutch fan. To make a blanket statement stating that the stock system works because one has had good luck with it for years is absurd. It doesn't work for everyone just because it works for you.

Running a separate tranny cooler is sage advice. 4 core radiators are a thing of old and they restrict airflow to a good extent. My truck came with a Modine Desert Cooler and it did not cut the mustard with no shroud and a 5 blade mechanical fan. I do run A/C for comparison.

Thanks,
See the second radiator on this page. It made my Modine look sick.
