What gearing does this X have? If you have 3.73s you would likely need to regear, as I believe the V8 Excursions only came with 4.10s.

I agree. The V8 Excursion may not be valued much less, but there aren't as many potential buyers either.

Also, I have to question your mechanic's judgement when he tells you a V8 would save money over rebuilding the V10. Considering all that would have to be changed for the V8 swap (wiring, exhaust, ECM, etc.) the V8 would have to be free to come out ahead.

Replace the heads on the v10 with ones with more threads for plugs!

You have to step on the gas harder to get and keep that mass rolling so a 5.4 would save little or nothing.

Rebuild the v10. Many buyers will expect issues
From swapping out from v10 to v8. I sure would worry. A rebuild by a shop with a receipt and warranty will increase your chances of selling.
I am always leary of "4 new tires" like front end problem is being covered up. Good luck and post pics of the work!

Well a big thanks to everyone for all the input and all the advice. The way it sits today after going over all the numbers and all the information I am inclined to go with the V8 just based on the hard numbers. However, this evening a friend called and gave me a line on a last shot v10. I'm going to go give it one last chance and let you all know how it works out. Thanks again for all the help you guys are always the best help no matter what!

I hope those hard numbers included changing the ECM because I am pretty sure the V10 and V8 use different ones. What about the exhaust?

The fact that he said he was inclined to go with a V-8 is what bothers me after he asked our advice and everyone said it was a bad idea, then he just happened to get a line on a 10.

It's his truck, and he'll be the one who has to live with the decision. While I'm sure the V8 does a fine job in an Excursion most would consider it to be underpowered. But if it makes him and his wallet happy I wish him the best of luck...and with any luck he won't return to complain about lack of power.

Yes, I did want advice, and I did take all everyone said to heart. However, the deal on the v8 was basically a free running engine, along with everything needed, everything bolted on, as well as the harness, the ecm if needed, and the exhaust (not sure how much of the exhaust) at least the headers. And yes, I do respect the opinions that I received here, but at the end of the day things come down to 1- availability or 1- money (yes two #1's) and in this case they both were heavily stacked to the v8. And lets face it, the truck had an option of a v8 or v10, so obviously it will do the job, albeit not the best of the best of what I wanted but the $$$ says v8. Anyway, I am still hoping this last minute v10 will work out, so don't complain that I wouldn't listen, I did listen, but at the end of the day I still had to make a decision, even if was the unpopular one. But see, I am still here, with my ear to the ground!

Now that you have elaborated on what you are getting in the deal, I can understand why you were considering the V8.
