Service Manager talked me out of Trading

I have been seriously considering trading my 08 4x4 KR. Had to take it in this morning for what I believe is a battery issue. Truck has been having a hard time turning over at first crank in the morning. Truck was there all day and they didnt get done with the battery test they say takes several hours to complete. Will take it back tomorrow if it cranks. This is the second set since the originals went bad and they are still under warranty so thats good.
I told my service man I was considering trading for a new gas engine because of the high service costs and the price of diesel. Gas has dropped .40 cents here in Tallahasse with diesel about .55 to .60 cents more at 4.05 to 4.10.
He knows my truck and knows I take good care of it and I have an extended warranty with 2yrs or about 18,000 miles to go on it yet. Oh and it is paid for.
He said to hang in and wait to see what the election brings. I probably will but just get tired of the cost of owning the diesel. Any others thinking of going back to gas?

I have kicked the idea of the Ecoboost around a little.

Been there, done that, and have the bill of sale to prove it. I really enjoyed my 6.4L and 6.7L trucks, but both would have made me nervous out of warranty, and I could not justify the additional cost of the diesel engine anymore.

There will always be the $.50-$1 difference diesel to gas no matter who is in office, if you are waiting for that to change you are going to be waiting until you die. With the EPA's war on diesels I feel it will just get worse as time goes on.

Our 6.4L had replacement batteries at under 3 years and sometime under 70K miles, not sure why they eat them so fast. Previous 6.0L had the originals just under 5 years 70K miles when traded and 7.3's went well over that.

Think I'll be getting a used Eco boost in a few years after someone else eats that first $10K-$20K depreciation and we see how they hold up.

I'd take a look at your annual mileage driven and total gallons of fuel and calculate how much it would cost driving a gasser vs a diesel per year

If you don't drive the truck much, a few hundred bux more per year for a diesel is noise in the grand scheme of things. Keep in mind diesel is more efficient than gas by definition, so the premium for diesel isn't as bad as it appears.

Compared to my F150, my F350 doesn't really cost much more to drive. I think it worked out to be within $0.01 or 0.02 per mile driven. Oil changes are expensive though..7qts vs 15qts.

I certainly get more smiles per gallon with diesel. Do I absolutely need a diesel? Probably not. One of those Raptors look pretty slick though.... What would I buy next? Probably another diesel. It's intoxicating.

I hear ya OP. I have also considered a change. I have driven the 6.2's and they are great empty, just not sold on load pulling. When I think of a Super Duty, I think of power, pulling and punch. The V10 had the best of all these worlds in gas, but still high rpms just does not compute. I am waiting for the 14's to come out and see what gels there. I really feel for everyone that is in this situation as fuel prices seem be making more of our decisions for us rather than comfort and safety.

My batteries lasted four years. about 70K miles. I considered it pretty good for the heavy towing and high heat under the hood.

For my needs a gasser would be the difference between driving the truck and having to drive the truck. So it won't work for me.

In you case I would wait just to see what new shows up on the lots. I don't think you need to be in a hurry. Money wise the best bet is to wait. Put that proposed payment in the bank for now.

Funny when you think of it, I don't need a diesel, bought one because after six weeks of looking for a gas truck in the south I couldn't look anymore. I went from a 2001 v10 to a 2008 KR 6.4. Got a little scared after getting it home and reading all the gripes on the 6.4 but I'm over that. I get twice the mileage in town that I was getting with my V10 and regularly get 18.5 on the freeway empty, truck is bone stock>for now. I do have a strange one though, 2WD, from Georgia, the under carriage is like factory new, amazing what no salt will do.
