97 F150 starting problems
Hello everyone,
I have a 97 f150 with a 4.6L engine and 145000 miles on it. A little while back while I was driving the truck it died on the road and I could not start it. I had it towed into a shop and they assumed it was the fuel pump so they replaced it and it ran for awhile then died again. It has been at the shop for a few weeks now and they just got back to me and described what they have found. I was hoping you all could help me.
1. They said that the fuel pump runs when external power is applied to it so they know it is not that.
2. They reran the wire to the pump from the engine just to make sure the wire was not damaged and still no luck.
3. They then attached external power to the fuel pump and the truck started right up. They talked about an option of installing a switch in the cab to flip on which would have the battery drive the pump all the time so that the truck would work. I did not like that idea kind of sounded cheap rather than finding the solution.
4. Due to that they believe that it is the PCM and they said that they think I need a new one or reflash the old one. Does this sound right to you all?
I have done some research and no luck yet. I do not believe the 97 has a fuel pump control module. We have tried all the keys and no luck with any of them.
Could it be the ecu or a grounding issue?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jon
