1bbl choke adjustment

1bbl choke adjustment
i've got an 82 F-150 300 six 1bbl, and the choke cannot be adjusted.
i've tried adjusting the choke housing, i've tried adjusting how the choke sets, and when it should engage when you press the pedal to the floor.
Nada.
This has happend on 2 separate carbs, and neither, would choke themselves automatically so starting the truck wouldn't be such a chore.
As it is now, in order to fire the truck off i have to turn the key on, pop the hood, go out and manually choke the carb and jump the starter relay, otherwise all i'm going to do is just wind on the starter.....pumping on the gas does nothing but flood the engine.
Any help is appreciated.

1bbl choke adjustment
Everything under the thermostat housing is intact, and the linkage itself works, and doesn't bind.
Come to think of it, it moves just a bit too easily.
The control rod that controls the choke, slides easily inside the arm that is screwed to the side of the carb. It seems to me it should have a slight bit of resistance, to keep the choke set.
I've considered here lately of just running a manual choke cable and forgetting the whole thing...but it irks me that the choke on a Autolite 2bbl, on the several SBF v8's i've had, never gave me one slight bit of trouble, but these blasted 1bbls are making me want to rip my hair out!
Thanks.... Tim.
