Just plain bad luck?

Ok so my buddy has a 2006 f250 and hasn't done much maintenence on it! i scolded him for it because i'm sure half of the problem is poor maintenence.

He was at work a few weeks ago and went out at lunchtime to sit in the truck and get warm (construction work) so he is sitting there idling and getting the engine warmed up. he reved it up a few times then it just suddenly stopped and would not restart.

long story but i had him get it towed to my garage and after doing some diagnostics on it i replaced the STC and the IPR for him. It now runs again however i went to back it out of the garage and no-move

If i rev it a bit i get a very slight movement in reverse.....nothing forward. then his tow/haul light starts flashing. I pulled the high level code p0721 I don't have a fancy transmission scanner to get anything further.
My question is....what are the chances that the engine issues and the transmission issues all happened on the same day when the truck was running fine?

Is it possible i bumped a wire somewhere working on the hpop? i'm just baffled that one person could have this much bad luck in one day.

forgot to mention....might be important. he said that when the truck was getting towed it acted like it was in park....but it wasn't they pulled it a bit and then it made a noise then started to roll.......not sure what kind of noise and what exactly that could have been that caused it to lockup like that. It is an automatic also.

I think you would get better responses in the 6.0 forum.

How was it towed.

How it was towed could be the next problem.

Will it go forward?

Has nothing to do with bad luck. Get the proper scanner or take it somewhere that will read codes from the TCM. You need to start there, simple as that.

It was towed with a rope for the first half of the trip....then i guess he almost wrecked it so then he got smart and called a tow truck.

What conserns me was the first part of the tow. He said it seemed like it was in park so they pulled it a little more and he heard a noise like a pop. but the truck was supposably in nutral so this confuses me.

Is it possible that the transfer case is in a nuetral state and isn't engaging? I don't really want to tow it to a transmission shop to find something silly i didn't already check.

i just found an article about towing a f250 and it said that the rear axle should be disconnected so the transfercase doesn't starve of fluid. is there a way to check the transfer case to see if it is shot? i'm afraid he ruined somethign down there by just pulling the truck like he did

ok now the picture is starting to come together.

1.truck engine broke down a good deal away from his house
2. he towed truck with a rope from work site to his house first mistake
3. when he tried to tow it again with a rope to my place he said it seemed "stuck" my guess is that he melted something inside the tranmission or transfercase. with a little tug he got it rolling again and towed half way to my place
4. he said it sounded like brakes grinding....can't be good!

no i just need to figure out if the damage is just the transfercase or both
anyone have any thoughts on this? can i somehow test the transmission to see if it is spinning the shaft if i remove the transfercase?
