I'm doing a complete rebuild on this truck. I have a new rebuilt 56 4.6 mod motor. I have a t-45 that came with it (its a 5 speed manual)

But I'm still going back and forth of whether an auto tranny is more desirable

Making it for yourself or planning on selling it?

If it's for you, pick what you prefer to drive. To me manual is more desirable, but I like to drive a stick. I think on these older trucks you don't have the issue of people not being able to drive a stick anymore than not being able to change out the oil, sort of goes with the territory.

In my book a 5 speed manual is a big plus.

I like to have a project going at all times, so after I build it and drive for a while I normally sell. I like manuals, never had an automatic. Just thinking that most of these trucks I see sell are autos. (with 350 chevy's) YUCK

Yea, I like running through the gears too. Just never done it in a hot rod truck! will a short throw shifter make any difference with the long shifter shaft that must be used?

I have a T56 6 speed in my 56. Most of the vehicles I drive and have driven are/were manuals, I prefer to decide when to shift. I have a short throw shifter kit installed (I'm used to sports cars with very short throw shifters) with a standard length stick. With my van captain's chairs the top of the shifter **** is just above the seat cushion. I don't like the long shifter sticks, makes the throws too long and awkward, I feel like I'm rowing a boat.

Total personal choice. Arthritis made my choice a few years ago.

I would love it to shift my sports car do. But I'm wanting to go with a bench seat and don't think that would be possible.
those were the seats that the guy I bought the project from intended to put in, but I don't think they would look good with the high backs in the window.

This is a bench I found at the yard, was gona recover it with black leather.

I don't know for sure about the T5, but I think it is going to be difficult to use a bench seat without modifying the center of the cushion for the shifter, even with the short tailshaft. Definitely won't work with the T56.
There are plenty of lowback buckets you could choose from. Pre 2000 Mazda Miata come to mind. Very comfortable, supportive, inexpensive, easy to find even in leather.
The world T5 shifts very well, short throw kits available.

It seems awkward, but whenever you "insert a picture" to one of these threads, the forum is looking for the picture somewhere on the web (which is always available) rather than from somewhere on your hard drive (which isn't always available).

Go to Image hosting, free photo sharing & video sharing at Photobucket and sign up for a free account. Then create an album for your truck. Upload any pics you want to post on FTE to that album. Have this album open on your computer when you want to post pics on FTE.

While you're making a post on FTE, select the pic you want to post from your Photobucket album. When the large version of the pic is open, right mouse click on it and select "View Image Info". The image info will be highlighted and will look something like this:
http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...ghtsafter1.jpg

Copy that highlighted info (right click / copy).

When you have the spot in your post where you want the pic to be placed, select the "Insert Image" icon at the top of the post (looks like a mountain) and paste (right click / paste) the image info you copied in the highlighted box (just shows "http://" when it opens).

Your pic will be placed in the post.

Hope that helps.

Here's a tutorial Bob put together: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/67...-pictures.html
