1987 F150 4x4 Fuel system problems!

I have a 1987 F150 4x4 and it will not start. I have it narrowed to the fuel system, which is still not very narrow. I have checked my pump in the gas tank-that checks out, the inline pump in the frame also checks out. The fuel filter is good. there is one other thing that I am not sure what it is, it is behind the inline pump, the fuel line runs through the top of it and there is a round section with about a 4.5" diameter and 2.5" tall, what is that?
If I disconnect the fuel line after the inline pump(high pressure pump) before the line goes to the engine should it pump fuel out? eventhough the line is not connected?
Other than that I have no clue what is going on, the inline(highpressure pump) is brand new, new fuel filter, and new inersia/relay switch.
Any ideas?

The canister you refer to is a reservoir. If you pull the line off at the engine, have someone just turn the key on (do not turn it to start), and see if it pumps fuel out. If not, you may have a problem with the fuel pump relay, under the hood.

That's really the only things I can come up with. Unless you have a really bad fuel pressure regulator, but then again it should still start.

1988 F-150, SWB, 5.0 EFI (formerly 4.9 EFI), M5OD 5 speed, 3.08 gears, Summit shorty truck headers, Custom built Flowmaster exhaust system. Force 4 LP6000 lightbar, Federal signal PA-300 100 watt siren, Icom IC-V100 50 watt mobile radio.

1965 F-100 (just purchased 1/18/01), SWB, 390, C-6 auto. Dual exhaust, Not much else to do to it.

Can see both below.

Here is a possibility: Under the drivers side console near the steering shaft is a white (I believe it is white) plastic lever/switch. I believe it will engage if the truck takes a really hard hit. I believe it also disengages the fuel system. This may be a long shot, but check it nonetheless.

I have had that switch engage on my truck before and after that it will not start. If this doesn't fix your problem just use it for future reference.
