V10 Towing and Tuners

Newbie here...

Anyone out there towing a RV with a F250 with a tuned V10?

I have a 08 CC SB RWD 4.10 towing a 8500 lb Rockwood 5th and am wondering if a tuner such as 5 star would improve towing power and what impact it would have on towing and non-towing mpg.

It has adequate power in the mountains, but you never can have too much. Mileage towing is around 8.0 mpg, non-towing around 13 mpg.

I have had my tuner since 6000 miles, I now have almost 83000 and no issues with the tuner. I tow a lot of different trailers from 1000lbs to 10000lbs and would not want to tow without a tuner at this point.
Come visit us in the V10 forum.

Thanks for the feedback. What tuner are you running and what are the details on your truck?

My truck is a '08 F350 crew cab, long bed, V10, auto trans, green beast. I got the tuner from Mike@5star who is a sponsor on these forums. Give him a call and tell him what truck you have and what you want out of a tuner, there are many options.

I have the same truck but 4x4. I think with the towing tune, it not only adds a little HP, but also changes the shifting points for the transmission. I get around 7.5 towing and around 11.5-12 unloaded. Get the tuner and enjoy! It's probably the best investment I've made in my truck!

My view is that an increase in HP is meaningless for towing...I want as much torque as possible at lower rpms. That should improve fuel mileage as it would have less tendency to downshift (or unlock the convertor) on smaller grades or headwinds. Have you noticed any difference in that respect?

I've never had an issue getting the truck/camper up to speed to my satisfaction...I don't normally use the tow/haul feature and let the trans upshift around 3000 rpm. I'll use the tow/haul in the hilly country, but more for compression braking.

I'm not looking to roar around in the truck...I've got other choices for that!

Edit: Is your truck also 4.10 rear?

I have noticed a slight decrease in the truck wanting to shift down when going up a grade. As for mileage, I've never towed my current trailer without the tune to know. One thing I may try on my next trip is to use marine fuel for a tank and see what happens. I use the T/H mode when I'm towing the trailer becuase after talking to some others, they felt it wouldn't hurt. The one thing I would like to change on mine is to raise the shift point for OD. And yes, I have the 4.10's, but wish I had the 4.30's. One of the reasons I have worse fuel mileage is that I'm running 295/75R18 Trail Grapplers and have a Fab Fours replacement bumper.

One option is you can have one of your three tunes set-up to lock out OD when you use tow haul. Something to think about.
