2 out of 3 o2 sensors

So i been working on this truck for a while now and i been tweaking it here and there and since summit racing is right down the road from me i kinda made it my second home.

So while in my new home i came across a pair of ford racing headers and a magnaflow cat that i well needed.

Well..... out of this setup i have one spot for an o2 sensor on the passanger side and one spot for a o2 sensor near the cat.

Now when i try to start it up it kinda take a few cranks to get it running and when it does it seem to not wanna stay running.

Do i need 3 o2 sensors or can i get a programer to cut out the 3rd one. I really dont want to have to go back to the old exhaust manifolds if i dont have to since i like the look of the headers. any ideas??

Does your truck have 3 sensors? If so you can delete the 3rd downstream sensor with an O2 eliminator from RJM but you need both front sensors.. 1 in each manifold or header.

Then you're gonna have to take the header off and weld in a bung.

but that doesnt make sense on why these companys would came out with a f150/E150 specific headers knowing that there is a new for the 3rd o2 sensor. i might have to call them and ask them directly

The front O2 sensors go in the y-pipe when your truck left the factory. The third one is also in the y-pipe but further downstream. That is why they can say the headers fit. There may have been some early OBS (And prior to that as well) truck/vans that had the O2 sensor in the manifold but yours did not.

Ford did not use the third O2 sensor, which measures converter efficiency, until they introduced the OBD-II control system in 1996 on the light duty trucks.

Very interesting...I learn something new everyday!

I have never seen the O2 sensors mounted in the manifold on this vintage truck. I know others have welded in bungs on each downpipe to mimic the factory location of their O2 sensors when using a 1995 and prior design Y-pipe on their 1996 light duty trucks/Broncos.

Strike one against me!

FWIW here is a thread from another forum about more or less the same subject: http://fullsizebronco.com/forum/showthread.php?t=150228

There are a few photos of the changes required to get a y-pipe for a 95 and prior F-series/Bronco to work on a 1996 Bronco with OBD-II and three O2 sensors.

its all good thats the whole point of this website. its all about learning. yeah it looks like i am going to have to cut and weld and bung in. Not on the top of my list of things to do but i guess it has to be done.

'96 is something of an orphan year - last year of the "old style" truck but first year of OBD2 requirement. I'd hate owning one - everything you research would need to be double/triple-checked to make sure it actually works with a '96.

Back-dating to an earlier EEC-IV setup might be a possibility if you don't have inspections, but it would kill the resale value.

No that's not necessary, most parts that fit '95 and earlier trucks also fit a '96, there are a few little gotchas that have to be dealt with but like this one it's not a big deal, you can have an O2 bung welded on there in 10 minutes at a muffler shop.
