'96 is something of an orphan year - last year of the "old style" truck but first year of OBD2 requirement. I'd hate owning one - everything you research would need to be double/triple-checked to make sure it actually works with a '96.
Back-dating to an earlier EEC-IV setup might be a possibility if you don't have inspections, but it would kill the resale value.
