I've been told that you can/should run closer to 18* before TDC. Any advantage/disadvantage?

All depends where you live and if your like a flat lander or in dry hot deserts to the mountains. But if your ever going to be doing any towing go with the stock setting...Oh and octane oh gas you use..orich

Ok knew their was a difference with the 1968 & 69 trucks models but had to look it up. Book says if you have the Exhaust emission control Points set at .021 Or dwell 24-29.The stock Engine. compression is 140 psi. Sorry for the delay but I'm old and slow moving NOW..orich

18* BTDC is way to much
you normally can go a couple degrees to get a little more out of a stock motor.

I use 10-12* on stock stuff. Give a touch of UMPH without making it knock/ping itself to death. Lets you run lower grade fuel.

Points around .020 or 28-32 on a dwell meter. You must reset timing if you mess points. On the other hand if you reset timing, you don't need to mess with points.

Points mess with timing, but timing does not mess with points.

Set the points first then the timing. A dwell meter is the most accurate way but a feeler gauge is fine.
