Question 352 rods in a 390?

What would happen to the motor if I used 352 rods with 390 crank?

Now the back story!!! I'm a votech collage student and I recently made a mistake with identifying the motor I was taking apart. I mistakenly thought that they only put 390's in cars. Well I got it all torn apart and parts ordered for a 390 when I found out that t is a 352. I was talking with my dad about what to do and he said that he might have a crank for a 390 and I can get the block bored to the right size what would happen if I used the 352 rods on the 390 crank and pistons?

The pistons will hit the heads. Not much room in there.

You need to do the math on your motor also. Check your true deck height vs. stroke, rod and piston compression height.

explain how you came to it being a 352 . did you measure bore/stroke ?
if it is a 352 someone over the years probably dropped an 352 in when the 390 died

Well I was told, by my uncle, that it was a 390 when i pulled it out of the crashed Custom 500. I took it apart and sent the block to a local guy to clean it because the school's cleaner is not very good. I knew there was going to be some ring ridge so he just stuck an internal mic in it and thats how I got the news that it is a 352 not a 390.

Could you explain how to do that or send me to a site that will?

you probably have a 390 as the bore is the same only stroke is different .
you can check your crank 390 has a stamping # see link for breakdown

I thought the bore on a 352 was 4.00 while the 360 and 390 were 4.05

Stock deck for a FE motor is 10.17 inches.

So, 1/2 the stroke, + the rod, + the compression height of the piston can't add up to more than 10.17.

Diagram here:

Once you confirm what you have, a direction can be chosen.

We had a low compression 390 one time. We wanted to bump the compression so we stuck 360 rods in it. It runs good.

What I would like to do is stick a 390 crank in a 352 block with 352 pistons and 390 rods making a 380. The compression would be around 9.3:1 if I did my math correctly.

You are corret

you probably have a 390 as the bore is the same only stroke is different.

No the crank would be from a 390 that was blown up years ago, if I can find it.
