Liquid vs. Aerosol Rust Converter

I am looking at rust converters and am curious to know the difference between liquid and aerosol versions. Does one work better than the other? Is it just a matter of convenience?

Thanks!

Well, the rust CONVERTERS are the same whether brush or spray. It's just a matter of preference or ability to get into the area needed - it might be tough getting a brush inside a door panel for example. Then there are the rust ENCAPSULATORS like those sold by Eastwood. The converters actually convert the rust to an iron based polymer while the encapsulators do just that; they coat the rust and the underlying steel in a heavy, air and water resistant coating. To me they seem very similar to the coating on structural steel. Both have their good and bad points. The converters really need to be coated with paint no matter what the can says. The encapsulators can be the final coating.

I have been using these products for a long time. If you can get access to the area that is rusted, the brush on converter will work a lot better than the spray type. Just be sure to put some in a small container to work from so as to not contaminate the main container. The spray on type works better than nothing in areas that are hard to access, but they do not penetrate into the metal nearly as well as the brush on type. The rust encapsulators are pretty good at sealing the area, but they do not work nearly as well as the rust converters do. The Best procedure is to knock off the loose rust, use the rust converter (brush on), then put a sealer of either paint or encapsulator as a final coat. It doesn't matter whether the sealing coat is brush on or spray.

Use that stuff in a well ventilated area.

Also, read up on the product before you purchase them. Some products are not UV stable, and will require a top coat if they will be exposed to sunlight.

I used some stuff from autozone…the product sells in a spray as well as in liquid form.

the spray seems to be chemical based vs the liquid form seems water base.

I have use d both and found the liquid milky looking one to work better . I put it in a fluid film spray can and sprayed it…
