The machine shop, CPO, in Cheyenne has been in business for over 40 years, and I trust their opinion when it comes to building motors. Also, I like Edlebrook carbs. They are easy to tune and they are very reliable carbs. I can see where Edlebrook carbs wouldn't work well on a track because of their vaccum secondaries, but for a street car they work just fine. Lastly, I believe that my 750 cfm carb is too big. Most people who build motors tend to over cam and over carb them. If you go to Summit Racing's website, you can use their "find the right carb" option to find the best cfm carb for your application. You type in your motor info, and then it tells you the best cfm carb for you. On my 460 they recommend 598 cfms. Big carbs like my 750 are mainly for high rpm motors. My 460 will never see rpms over 4500.

hello fellow wyoming. i'm sheridan up north.
you just answered a huge question i asked earlier and you never answered. your elevation!!!!! being i am extremely familiar with high elevation tuning and i build engines like yours often. the 750 cfm isn't to big. also one of the problems you will come into summer months possibly is engine overheating. Because the air is so dry and lack of air at your elevation your possibly gonna get into pinging issues. edelbrock is a good carb but you said big torque not regular torque engine. most of the engines i run in wyoming run 750 cfm to 950 cfm in my 4wds in high performance and towing applications. edelbrock doesn't have the higher end boosters for towing applications. also when running in extreme cold like in the -0 to -20 below temps with to small a carb your velocities are to much and promotes icing of the carb and clogges off the air bleeds in extreme situations. do you know your average air pressure for your elevation? i know what your average air pressure is! for high elevation tuning your headers will come into play on port sizing and 2.5" exhaust pipe. i tune these types of engines often and own this similar setup. what is you camshaft specs if you don't mind me asking another factor to know.

I told the machine shop my budget and what I was planning on using the motor for. Right now, I don't even know how much they needed to bore the cylinders or how much resizing my rods needed. Also, I don't know the specs on the cam yet. My 460 was built for real world driving and towing, and not for racing. Tomorrow I will call the machine shop to get some more info. I was hoping to have my motor this week, but it never happened. It's going to take time to collect all my parts to get the 460 ready for install, water pump, reengineered motor mounts, ect... Lastly, I've never had an Edlbrook carb ice up in the winter. All my Edelbrocks always had open air cleaners on them. The only carbs that seem to ice up are the stock Ford Autolite 2100 series carbs, and all then had OEM air cleaners on them.

hello from sheridan.
these engines i speak of are stout towing application. racing i would go about it a little different. bigger cam in the .600+ lift and stall converters. these truck engines i build are 100,000 mile engines. if you get a chance read about annular boosters, Home / Quick Fuel have a excellent tech page. all carbs are not created equal. just trying to educate fellow ford guys. have a good evening and talk later. drop some cam spec on us later when you get a chance. i do understand the budget and budgets suck, but that is life. keeping old iron alive one ford at a time.

torque plate engine block?
does your machine shop have a torque plate for a 460. this plate is used to help simulate a torqued head on a block. once you torque down a head on a engine block the upper cylinder moves and distorts the cylinder bore a little. some blocks move more than others but they all move some. just helps the ring sealing at the top 2" of cylinder bore. good luck. my machine shop in sheridan Top End has this plate and several others. good luck.
