Fitting GIANT axles on to a super duty.

So I'm still pursuing a big truck project.

It will be a 2008-2010 superduty with 466 dt, MD manual trans, probably a fuller 7 spd, giant MD transfer case, and Big AZZ axles. And 40" float wheels.

I found a few big trucks for parts that have 4x4 drivetrain, and the axles look like they will bolt right on to an f350 with minor work.

Heres the problem though; from edge of tire to edge of tire is 100 inches, which is very wide for a super duty.
The tires would sit almost completely out of the front wheel wells.
The back would work alright with a dually bed, but the front is an issue.
So there are a few options:

1. Get axles shortened, which I don't know how easy that would be, or how reliable or strong they'd be afterwards...
2. Get custom fiberglass wheelwells made for the front, possibly by hacking up some dually fairings...
3. Install bushwhacker fender flares, then extend them with checkerplate aluminum painted color of truck. ( which will look maybe stupid. )

Any ideas anyone?

Sounds awesome!

I can tell you that shortening of axels wouldn't probably be such a huge problem. People shorten ford 9" rears all the time for drag racing. If they can hold up to 500lbs of torque it probably wouldn't compromise integrity. Granted, this is dependent on who does the work and how well they do it.

Good luck! Post pictures when you can!

Are you considering a tilt front clip as well? If so, then the F-650/750 doghouse will probably work.

Short of that, you might try researching heavy trucks that are used in the railroad industry. Some of those trucks have special width axles because they have to ride on the tracks....some of those trucks are pretty heavy. You might find what you need there.

Most of the big railroad trucks DON'T have special axles as the inside wheel of the duals rides the rail and the front end is completely picked up off the ground and rides on a different rail axle with small rail wheels.

What would the purpose of said axles be? Are you planning on vastly exceeding stock power levels?

If you're staying anywhere near the stock power of the little bitty DT why not just keep the stock axles?

Want a truck that will take a beating and not wear out as quick as what we got.
Mine have lasted alright, but I've babied them.

Want to run marmon axles, 40" floats on 22.5" rims, (unless i can find smaller) ... 6 or 7 spd fuller or roadranger or something.... giant azz tcase... and yes the 466 dt... most likely around 600 hp, because I don't plan on spending huge cash on HP, it will just snap expensive things.

It would be nice to be able to run over little logs and stuff and not need steering boxes and alignments.
A guy at work has same as my truck, but drives hard, 4 steering boxes in 100k km's.

Strait front axle? Just have it shortened, it will be just as strong after the work. It would be a super great time to get the front diff to line up perfectly with the transfer case.

I just finished up shortening an axle on my brothers camaro. Most expensive part is getting the shafts resplined and hardened or getting new shafts.

This is good news to me, a lot of those larger axles have the diff dead center, which would require even more lift that I don't want.

I wish I could get smaller commercial tires and wheels, but 19.5" rims seem to be reserved for highway use only.

The 22.5" rims have a lot of floater tires but theyre all 40 inch tires that I can find.

I would only go 35"-37" on the 22.5's if I could, just doesn't look like thats in the cards .

Any reputable axle shop can shorten the axle tubes and shafts and weld on new tabs for the springs. Dynatrac is the first one that comes to mind.

"reputable" axle shops are rare here.

We actually figured that the bigger axles would bolt right onto the PSD suspension with some machined steel spacers.
(and the u bolts from the big axles)

I researched that one further and I peg it's actual value at around 13,000$.
