good thing i checked the tranny oil, its really low. also found a piece of steel 1 1/2 lonf might be part of synchro??
8 quarts of 50 sae oil ?? that sound right.... again parts stores dont have straight 30/40/50 weight, they have axel grease in 80/90 weights .what is a good substitute... i am putting in 10w-40, for time being, at least to flush out the crap

clark 280 5 spd

in the shop manual page 16-40-6, fig. 10 is the exploded view of the gear shift housing. the piece i pulled out of my tranny appears to be a "shoe" p/n 7B403 attaches to "fork" p/n 7231 ! I GUESS it's an extra part because tranny works ok[lower cause letters] i do have issues shifting and grinding gears. which i assumed was to to me being 185 pound weakling, with arthritis....... all kidding asidemaybe if i was to replace this my shifts would be smother......oh one of the ears/tabs is broken off

Some manual transmissions specify ATF.

For your trans, you want something compatible with synchros. This propaganda talks about that, and you can find similar info from other oil suppliers:

Transmission Fluid

transmission oil

the "shop Manual" on CD specified SAE 50(eight quarts) but that was 1973. well i tried to put in a 5 quart jug, funnel overflowed, tranny would only take four quarts.

Your trans probably has a removable shift tower. Do you have a removable panel in the floor of the cab? If so, you can pull the top off and replace any worn or missing items.

The "inspection" cover is probably a PTO port.

Sorry, forgot about it being a C from your prior posts.

Moving the van body back sounds like a real pita. It would depend on your access to the right equipment and materials to be able to jack it up, secure it and drive out from underneath it.

Easier said than done.

Surprised they'd spec 50w for a synchronized transmission??

Lots of synchronized manual tranies use ATF..

If you want to fix the shifting fork you're going to have to pull the transmission. Moving the box back or cutting a hole for access is not going to work. You'll wind up causing more harm.

Also, those things never shift good.. If its currently working, putting a new shift fork or repairing the one you have will only help with the sliding clutch that its hooked too. Depending on how the synchro is built it may not even help at all.. The only issue with shiftability that the broken fork would cause would be if the sliding clutch that it was moving somehow got crooked, or off center on the mainshaft because of the missing fork pieces.

I've never actually delt with this exact transmission. So I cant really tell you if the sliding clutches would easily get off center because of missing fork pieces.

shift shoe

oil, the manual calls for 8 quarts, it wont take five, as it spilled out when i realized the funnel was not draining any more. cleaned off 39 years of road grime and found the label and it is a clark 285v.
shift tower, i believe if i ca n kneel for a couple hours i have just a enough head room to pull the tower and look to see whats up with the shoe.
ther are two shifter "yoke" maybe one is for second & ? gear. sure is hard to get second, most times i end up going into forth. Today is band competion, and i'll drive 20 mile round trip. i'll find out if i can hit second today or learn to axel shift into 3rd lo, 3rd hi then four lo.....i am still trying to get this shifting down.
