66 f100 352-429 engine swap

Hello,

My uncle gave me my dad's 66 f100for free. Its in really good shape with no rusting and only two dents. The 352 is locked up and I found a running 429 with auto trans for a deal. I was wondering what is needed to swap the 429 with the 352. I'm pretty sure the cross member has to be changed for the trans because it still has the 3 speed, but other than that what else would I need to change. Please help and info will be great

Thank you, Shane

Shane, You will need engine perches from a late 70s 150/250 460. You could grab the cross member at the same time but, I believe the original can be used. My 66 still has the original 3 spd holding a C6.

John, do you consider 1973 a "late '70's?" / F350 460 same parts as F100/250 460.

460 engine mounting parts same: 1973/76 F100 / 1973/79 F250/350 / 1975/79 F150 / Ford part numbers listed for clarity only, all are obsolete.

460 not available in F100's after 1976. F150 introduced in 1975 / ALL 2WD only / No 460's available with 4WD or a M/T until 1983. These engine mounting parts will not work on anything prior to 1980.

D3TZ-6028-A Right & D3TZ-6029-A Left .. Engine Supports aka towers, stands, perches.

D3TZ-6030-A Right & D3TZ-6031-A Left .. Brackets / These bolt to the block, the rubber insulators bolt to these, then to the supports.

2) D3TZ-6038-A .. R/L Front Rubber Insulators.

D3TZ-6A023-A .. Rear Engine Support / Some people call this a cross member, bolts to frame rails. Same as: 1973/76 F100/250 360/390 2WD & F350.

D3TZ-6068-C .. Rear Rubber Insulator.

Thanks guys. This is my first total restore so it will be fun. I hated that the 352 was locked up (soaked cylinders in wd-40 all week) because its a numbers matching truck but I couldnt pass up a deal. 429 and C-4 (i believe) out of a 71 mustang that runs for 600$

No such thing as "numbers matching." Numbers matching is a GM thing.

You won't find a C4 behind any 429 or 460. 1968/73 429 & 1968/88 460: The only available A/T was the C6, has 17 trans pan bolt holes.

The only 1971 Mustang w/a 429 would have a Cobra Jet or Super Cobra Jet engine. Never mind the Mustang itself, there's no way on god's green earth, unless the seller is clueless, to buy a 429 CJ or 429 S/CJ engine for $600.00.

More than likely, the Mustang has a 302 or a 351C. 302 came with a C4 (11 trans pan bolt holes) / 351C could have a C4, C6 or an FMX (14 trans pan bolt holes).

Valve covers bolts per side: 429/460 = Seven / 302 = Six / 351C = Eight.

Do not believe a single word a seller claims! Private sellers lie just like used/new car dealers, lawyers, politicians and TV evangelists.

Was not the original motor in the mustang. I'm on a business trip and I had my mechanic go get it. He says its a 429 it probably is a C-6 I haven't laid my hands on it yet, all I have is pictures.

Mr Wilson, I just point them in a good direction, then wait for you to come by and nail it down.

Any idea of how many 73s one would have to go through to find a 460?

Here in CA they aren't that hard to find, probably not that hard to find in TX either, as more of these trucks were sold in these two states than anywhere else.

In states where salt is used on the roads, probably difficult to find. OP lives in Arkansas, dunno if salt is used on the roads there.

No sir we do not use salt, really not that much different from Texas. I ought to be able to find a mid to lates 70's truck fairlly easy. Thanks

Correct, but you cannot use F250 disc brakes on an F100, because F250's have 8 lug wheels on a 6.50" bolt circle. F250's front suspension also different, so you cannot use the F250's P/S on an F100 either.

Mr. Wilson sez no, so may I suggest that you find a 73-79 half ton 460/C6 and use that for your donor.

I was unaware that there were two power steering gears, but what do I know?

The F250's steering gearbox itself is the same as F100/150, but the Pitman Arm and suspension is not the same as F100/150.
