Question Clunk noise becoming regular, need some insight!

I have a 97' f250, 4.6L auto transmission, 4x4, 168000.

I have only owned the truck about 5 months so I dont know much about the history. When I coast to a stop, (usually 40mph or faster) to a stop I get a clunk on the down shift into second I believe. It only happens when coasting to a stop, all other shifting up and down patterns are good. This happens I would say 7 out of 10 times but seems to be increasing.

The other issues that I beileve is related happens everytime I put the truck into reverse, there is a similair clunk. This happens everytime and does not do it into drive.

I have ran lots of searches related to this in FTE, I cant get a clear direction to begin down. It seems like it could be transmission related but also may be driveline or U-joint related.

Any thoughts from FTE members would be greatly appreciated.

Two other notes-I did drain and repalce the transmission fluid and I noticed that the T-case and transmission are much cleaner than any other undercariage part. Whatever that means??

Thanks

Get under your ride and try to rotate the drive shaft from side to side. Does it move ? if so than I would guess yes you need a new 1 OR both of your U joints.

You say you drained the tranny ? did you check to see if you lost any since then ?

Just trying to help bro :~)

the fluid level is fine, no leaks anywhere, the driveline feels tight although there is probably a load on it because my ebrake doesnt work so its in park on a slight incline.

Sorry man new baby at home. So after reading your 1st post I would say check your front brake caliper bolts. If it's not "clunking" in shifting I would not look at the tranny. I'm sorry but if you have a auto why do you need to park on a hill ? But any way jack up the rear end put it on jack stands and try the drive shaft that way.

Hope this helps ya bro

to elaborate the clunk comes from under the cab towards the rear some. If I put the truck in N when coming to a stop and it continues would that rule out the tranny?

It could be the spline in the driveshaft yoke in the rear of the transmission. Sometimes the yoke will not slide in and out when the movement of the rear axle moves up and down. I would remove the drive shaft and lubricate the splines. This could definately cause the clunk you are hearing.

If that is causing the noise, yes it will. This will be the opportune time to check your u-joints, making sure they move smoothly without any looseness or roughness.
