Youtube is your friend Ford Pickup spare tire solution - YouTube

I've seen people do this with a regular socket and just hammer it on to the keyed insert.

Worst case, cut the cable, take out the wheel, remove the keyed insert, install new cable, reinstall spare wheel. Key no longer needed.

One of those idiot dealers, and people wonder why they get a bad reputation. Had the same thing happen when I got a flat and the dealer drilled and/or cut the lock off next time I had it in.

I'd say that at about 4:45 is the "cheapest" solution.

When he talks about pulling the scoop/hood thingie I just twisted it to pull it off, although your mileage may vary. Mine didn't have a key... or the spare any more either.

9/16 socket on a long extension, pound it on the lock.

Crank the tire down with a ratchet, then pull out the extension. Socket will remain on the lock.

Remove the plastic tube. 1/4 turn and it will pull right out.

Reach up in there with a screwdriver and hammer and pop the lock out. No need to remove the winch from the truck like in the video.

Put the plastic tube back in.

Now you can raise/lower the spare tire with your jack handle.

@ kd0axs
I was looking for those directions, and the video was the closest I got.

Thanks for posting the simplified version.

BTW What holds the stupid thing in place?

Is just some small clip? I can see how it is
easy to over-ride the lock and steal a tire.
Maybe time to get a lock and chain for that.

NEVER had my spare tire off in 8 + years ! Any pre removal ideas ? sprays etc. Does this f 150 you tube apply to f 250 2004 models are they alike ? I have been thinking it would be a good idea to take a look and try to remove so IF I get a flat I could have ( already have done it ) better expierence in taking it off , not being stuck somewhere and dealing with all this crap ? BETTER to have done this before ! RATHER than on the job expierence.

Mike get your butt outside this weekend and take your spare down.
On the side of the road during a storm is not the place to find out that you do not have the Knowledge, tools or some other necessity to do the job.
Also tires age and the rubber deteriorates.
The consensus is that 6 years is the lifespan for a tire, used or not.
After that period of time the possibility of having a tire failure is enhanced.

When I get called out to assist a roadside failure and the owner does not have the items needed to remove the wheel IE; The key for a wheel lock (most often ),The winch key(Subject of this thread) or the rod for winding down the spare, then the cost escalates accordingly.
Being dumb (stupid) should hurt.
Since I can't hit people, I hit their wallet.

my dads 2000 never had the spare removed, actually last week he bought a new spare because the OEM spare was all cracked and dry rotted. I simply installed the key and turned the spare down, no problem with rust or anything. I did spray some lube in there just because
