History of the Highboy

Does anyone have any old articles or write ups about the highboys? Specifically spec sheets with what options were offered, gearing, trim etc. I'd like to learn a little more history about our trucks. Thanks

If you check the FAQs thread at the top of the forum, there is a sticky devoted to Highboys, should be helpful.

Here you go alittle history about Highboys in general. To be more specific about yours you need to look up the info on your warranty tag.

You won't necessarily find "spec sheets" as this is an enthusiast term and not referenced in actual Ford literature.

Why are the '59 to '66 4X4's (excluding '66 F100's) not considered highboys? Is it because they only have a 3.5" tall block under the rear instead of a 4" block?

Technically speaking, they are "highboys" and should be considered as such, they meet all the same criteria that make the 67-77.5's highboys e.g. straight ladder style frame, divorced t-case, 5-7 leaf positive arch front spring pack, crossmember under front bumper, in-cab fuel tank, lifted stance, etc.

It's the very same platform as the 67-77.5's highboys, but for whatever reason the slang term highboy is most often, if not always, associated with the 67-77.5's only.

I had bookmarked a website a long time ago "Old Iron" or something like that that identified these years as highboys.

Edit": heres the link for anyone interested:

That's a good article

I think the reason those earlier years are the "forgotten" highboys is there's just so few of them still surviving, unlike the 67-77.5's which are still pretty ubiquitous.

Do I have the last highboy?

I was reading up on these trucks and looking at mine. The thread on the forum says that the highboys stopped in feb '77. Mine is defiantly a highboy. The build date is march '77. The thread said they stopped building at y20,001, mine is number Y23,640.

It is defiantly highboy, with all the right specs.

Does anybody have one after that without the married transfer case?

Did you get the serial # from the door or the frame?

Might be a door/cab swap onto a highboy chassis.

Man, I thought I was a little late to the highboy party with my truck, but you certainly have me beat by quite a lot. My 77 is only Y21630 Matching on the frame, cowl and door.

OB, you're not the first guy to proclaim a post Y20,001 highboy, i remember a few others in the past, as well as on other forums too, here's one example: The old question, the 1977 F250 1/2 cut off date. - Ford Truck Club Forum

Y20,001 is the cutoff number i've always heard/read, it's the number used here and on other forums, in parts catalogs/online stores, etc., i'm not saying it's gospel, just the accepted number.

I don't doubt that you and a few others have post Y20,001 highboys, after all, this is Ford we're talking about so who knows what the actual number is.

I would be curious to know how many '77s got the 335 series engine option versus the FE.
