changing out tranny's

hey guy's. Ive got a 302, 79 f100 style side, right now i have a four speed bulldog transmission. Dont really care for the low gearing, I am wanting something more adequate for normal driving

What i would like to do is either, go with a 5 speed manual,(for gas mileage. or, change it to an automatic.

I was told by a gentleman that I could use a later model atomatic transmission with manual overdrive (i think he said the overdrive connected to the drive shaft), Im really not very knowledgable about transmissions,
Id like to burn a little rubber if the mood hit, but also have a good top end running gear...

if im not mistaking, a c4 would match up to my 302

what is your suggestions.

C4s do not have overdrive. If your wanting to stick with a stick then the t-5 would be a good option for you to consider. You could also swap in a ZF5 but those are a little more expensive and I believe most with the sbf bellhousing comes with the low first gear.

If you want the automatic you can check out the AOD ,it will work with your 302.

hi ,last week , i finished swap my transmission, i changed my old T-18 like yours , to a T-170 , this manual tranny has a overdrive with 4 gear 1 : 0.76 and it works so great fast and feel like a car in the shifter

it could be another option for you.

I think it is a 3 speed with OD. They were pretty bad from the factory. But with a little work they are great. They were late 80's early 90's small block tranny.

AOD=Automatic ,with overdrive, not the manual 3+1 , which is a 3 speed almost like a top loader 4 speed but 4th is overdrive.
The AOD is almost the same size as a c/4 as far as the space it uses.
I have a couple i got by trading one of the 3+1 tranys for, i plan to put one in my 73 f-100 later.

Another option is the M5OD-R1 tranny has 5 speeds and has hydraulic clutch, but you have to change a few more things like pedals, clutch plate

With the T-170 really felt much difference, and improved gas mileage and the better thing is that i used the same clutch plate the same bellhausing and the same fork of the old t-18 .

is the T-170 a manual 4 speed or 5 speed,

What year trucks are they found in ? and it should bolt up to my existing bell hausing ?

When i change transmissions, do i need to do anything to my rear end ? change gears, etc.

I have a Hurst 4 speed shifter now, do you think it would be compatable with the t-170,

thanks guys, really appreciate the comments and suggestions.

2 T-170F (cod -rug)
3 T-170RS (code-rug)

Ford Truck Manual Transmissions

In my case i chose the t-170 FT (code rts) because it has overdrive and the shifter is on the top

the donor was year 88 2wd .

in fact you can use the same bellhausing the same starter and the same cluth plate of the T-18 .

ocastari, the Hurst shifter I currently should work with the t-170, it is a 4 speed shifter, would their be anything else I should change out with transmission ?

my clutch and everything seems to be in good shape, I cant notice any slip and it shifts very easy.

thanks for the help

HURTS shifter you refer to a tranny or only the shifter??

the tranny toploaded has 4 speed but i thing is not over drive like t-170 although both trannys has the same size , you dont need nothing else only swap this .

have you not thought about the other option the M50DR1 .?

want to research how much i have to change, If the t170 will match up with all my current setup, i was thinking that for now it would be much easier to got that route,
what exactly has to be changed out with the MD50DR1... i know you have allready told me the clutch plate and pedals ( is that all? ).

and on the Hurst, i am refering only to the shifter, (like i said, I am an transmission idiot... ive fooled with them a bit, but not really enough to say I know anything about them....
But: I THINK I'M FIXING TO LEARN....lol

thanks for all the info.
