Transmission question.

I'm still working on my new to me 2000 Ranger 2.5 auto 2WD. It's pretty well sorted out now but I have a question about the transmission. When it's shifted from park into drive, it takes a few seconds to actually engage, then it moves with out any slipping or revving. Also sometimes from a stop if you step on the gas you can feel the transmission engage with a little bit of a bump. I thought that the park to drive thing might have been something to do with the valve body but while observing the small bump when taking off from a stop, I'm thinking that maybe there's some sort of overrunning clutch that's not engaging correctly. With 178k on the truck, I'm just trying to to decide to fix the tranny or if it run a while like this, just let it go till it fails for good. I changed the fluid and filter when I got the truck. There's about a quart of Lucas tranny additive in there too.

is your speedometer working fine? how about your ABS light any issues?

The only additive I would ever consider putting in a tranny is Lubegard.

I think I would have it flushed - if you can find someone with the machine to do it... Sounds like it's gummed up to me.

Just a thought...

another symptom

Lately, I have been getting a VERY harsh 1-2 shift when it's cold but after a few minutes, it straightens out. I'm more puzzled.
