Question Steerling Wheel problem

I have a 97 f-250 7.3. I have some play in the steering wheel. It is more up & down than sideways. It seemed to develop fairly fast. At first there was some noise like something was clicking inside and then i noticed the excessive play. Is there a bushing or something that maybe gave way? It seems to drive fine but does have a little catch in it when you turn. The steering does not seem loose as far as driving.

There are two bearings on the steering shaft. You can get them at ford for about 20 bucks. Dont go to long with out changing them or it will eat up the shaft and the bearings wont fix your problem. Dont ask me how i know.

How do you go about changing the bearings? Is it something that I can replace myself and save the cost of taking it to a garage?

O ya it it totaly doable. The major tools are a steering wheel puller, snap ring pliers, star bit sockets, and a couple screwdrivers.
