transmisson problems

so my 88 ford f250 4x4 isnt going into gear...when i crank it up i try to put it into gear and the thing wont budge except for in reverse but it wont engage it will just grind...when i turn it off it will go through the gears...my friends said that the clutch is gone and i need a new one but im not so sure...the truck was leaking transmission fluid can that have something to do with it not going into gear??

First thing is to check the clutch fluid level.
