Question cam phase timing ? Mike @ 5 star check this out

Guys my 2000 f-250 v-10 is sucking the gas literaly...only getting 125 miles on a tank of gas (29 gallon) this is with 10% ethanol chevron fuel. I was getting over 300 with non-ethanol when I could get it.

Any how...I have been chasing a couple of minor issues and seem to have them resolved, In the course of getting advise from a friend at my parts supplier...He recomended I call a friend of his who has a shop and does Diesel conversions and such and is knowledgable about the v-10's.
In the course of talking to the mechanic I mentioned about my gas mileage being half what it was, he told me he had a possible solution for that. When I pressed him on it he told me that he could hook up a laptop and adjust the cam phase timing(?) Has anybody heard of this? or is he blowing smoke?

Mike if you read this, I figure you would know if this would work or not? seeing as how you're the v-10 go to guy... BTW... I'm currently running tow -haul tune on my truck....thanks guys

Mike has an email through 5startuning if u would like.to get a hold of him.

My truck was doing the same thing and I changed the fuel filter, air filter, cleaned the MAF sensor and throttle body and got my mpg back up.

Did the MPG change that drastically in one tank?

I have heard horror stories about ethanol killing MPG, but that is

10 percent Ethanol does kill mpg. Every few tanks I run chevron. If its just a drastic change in one tank I would try a different brand gas. If I rub Mobil gas I seem to get better mpg over anywhere else.

The V10 doesn't have a cam phaser - only the 5.4L 3-valve does, and possibly the 4.6L 3-valver.

What's worse is, even if he thought the 3-valve V10 did, yours is a 2-valve.

So the guy is 100% wrong on both counts.

I would go back to the guy who recommended this "mechanic" and let them know they should stop recommending him to other people

not to mention, if it were possible to get radicaly better MPG with just a simple timing adjustment, dont you think Ford would have done so with the trucks software already ????

Thats what I thought as well. I have changed the fuel filter, changed air filter cleaned the maf as well. I pulled a plug..it was sorta white ashey(?) as soon as I have a good 1/2 day I'll change them out.BTW Im useing oem motor craft parts as well. I found some non ethanol fuel and have run a couple of tanks thru it ...i picked up maybe 20-25 miles per tank. I was gonna let the guy look at it to see if he can see anything obvious with it. this is after i took it by the dealership and the tech i know there hooked it to his diagnostics and could find nothing obvious.seeems funny that all the things i think it may be...IAC for example, they should throw a code if they are acting up, this truck has NEVER set a code in the 10 years i've had it. I'll keep ya'll posted, thanks

Britt, these motors don't throw codes for a lot of things. Especially the IAC.

Look through the tech folder ...

While it seems opposite of what you would think, a lean running V10 (according to your "ashey plug" comment) will get WORSE gas mileage. You might have a vacuum leak - check that PCV elbow at the throttle body.

I had to pull the hose to see the crack and it was pretty bad. I ordered mine and made a temporary while waiting for the OEM part to arrive. When it arrived I realized it was foolish to have replaced a known bad part with the same part. If I had it to do again I would have just skipped the OEM and kept my "temporary hose" because it did not have that sharp bend. Not to mention it was cheaper. I just used the correct diameter fuel hose about 18 inches long so it had a nice easy curve to it.

Same here....just used some 3/8" fuel line and made sure I did not have a sharp bend in it. Works just fine.
