1990 ZF-42 Problems.

I have a 1990 F250 4x4 with the ZF, Its been a hit and miss truck since i got it, and ive finally had no issues with it for a month until last night, It was raining pretty good and i was out country cruising. truck ran great, I get home and it sat for about 30 minutes, then i was back on the road. Ran fine to my destination (about 2 1/2 miles) shut it down and sat there for about 5 minutes, when i went to leave it was shifting fine, constant clutch pedal pressure but it would just rev up with barely picking up any speed. i figured the clutch was wet and figured i would let it dry overnight. go out to leave for work this morning and its still doing it any suggestions???

You probably need a new clutch. Can you smell it? You could remove the inspection plate and take a look.

I dont see how a bad master/ slave would make your clutch slip.

If you are gonna go in to change the slave cyl. ( I assume it is the internal type) you mite as well do the whole thing ... pull it all once and be done with it... while you're in there change the pilot bearing ... trust me on that one !!!!
Unless you just love pulling the trans LOL !!!

after sending it to the transmission shop here in town the say the clutch springs got tempered and became weak so it needs a new clutch set. Any ideas on what else i should change while inside other than the slave, throwout and pilot?

Thats pretty much all there is between the flywheel and the trans. Dont cheap out on the slave cylinder. I tried to pinch a few pennies and get a cheaper one from a local auto parts store and wound up replacing it in less then 1 year.

^^^^^^^^ What he said. I agree 1000% the "BEST QUALITY" T.O. bearing, slave cyl. and pilot bearing from Ford will be the"BEST VALUE" for you parts $$$'s.
I know because my 90 F250 with a ZF 42 is going thru the same thing. I'm now retired and on social security and must change all those parts and can't afford to do it anytime soon. The workings in there have been changed twice in 4 yrs. ... about 35K miles. and my truck is my ONLY ride.... PLEASE take my word on this subject ... good luck on this !!! Dave
