i am getting fuel through my fuel pump and to the carb. but not from the bowl to the barrel. i think the accelerator pump is leaking a little bit. would that cause no gas to be shot into the 2 barrels?

OP- These trucks really weren't built with fuel economy in mind, gas was $1.xx when they were new. Might want to look into a little econobox for daily driving, such as a Civic, Protege, Escort, etc. They're not fast or cool by any means, but they get the job done and are cheap (and easy) to maintain. My '91 Mazda 323 cost all of $41 to fill up from "E" and gets 400 miles to a tank (13 gal).

Pick your poison...

I really cannot buy into the mentality that you need an "econobox" as a "daily driver". While your Ford truck (whether those of this vintage or many of the newer ones for that matter) may not get the best mileage these oldies:

1. Are easy to maintain. There is much better access to whatever may need repair compared to the above mentioned econoboxes.

2. Generally are operated at a level below what they were designed for; whereas the smaller vehicles are typically operated at a level closer to (if not above) the functional levels for which they were designed which translates to the probability of more (and more frequent) repair costs.

3. License, tax, and insurance are generally lower for our older trucks.

4. There is really no substitute for having more substance - steel - around you in the event of an accident.

5. How can you put a price on knowing all the ins and outs of your vehicle and its various components and systems?

So, in summary, you can "save all that money on gas" - only to spend it on replacement or repairs on marginally capable vehicles or drive the truck you enjoy and buy a little more fuel.

As for our household, no energy has been expended building us a new vehicle in the past 15+ years. And my F350 with 351W does 13.5 to 15 MPG in mixed driving and 16.5 to 18 highway - at 470,000 miles and counting.

dn.

How is a small car "operated at a level closer to (if not above) the functional levels for which they were designed " whereas a truck isn't? Just because the 1.6L in my Mazda is turning 3k at 70mph it doesnt mean it's above it's functional level. I picked up my econo car for $500 and have sunk maybe $200 into it for a battey, brakes and a balljoint (very easy fixes). I'm not saying these trucks aren't easy to repair or aren't reliable, but I'd rather change a bolt-in ball joint vs spend 4 hours with a press and hammer. If you dislike import cars for whatever reason that's your choice, however I've grown to accept them for their strengths (economy, reliability, cost of ownership). Sure vinyl seats and no A/C kind of sucks, but it's not the end of the world.

I do love my truck for what it is, however I can't justify 14mpg and $100+ fill-ups when there's an alternative. If you have the income to do so then by all means enjoy your truck, some of us are struggling to make ends meet in this world.

some folks just don't get it.
my truck is 100X the vehicle my mazda car is,but at 30+ mpg,and like you, with other much more important needs than lining the pockets of big oil and all involved,im all smiles.
the car is easy(though tight) to work on,parts cheap enough and heck i hate manual transmissions, but with work drying up on me again for the season,it sure is nice to hop in something cheap to run around in when the truck isn't needed.
it's so drastically cheaper,it almost feels as if im driving it around for free lol.extra insurance costs, way out trumped in fuel savings.
those who wont accept the fact that driving a truck as a dd is no longer a practical option (unless it's working making $) will shortly be broke.if not then for sure much reduced bank accounts.no way around it.well off or not.
the sooner they realize it,the better off they'll be.
this is always so easy for me personally anyway though i must say,cus i'll pick a car over a truck if the truck isn't needed any day.iv always preferred driving cars more than trucks, even an old worn out, rusty beater car over a nice truck lol.understandably on a site such as this,i'll be in the minority of course.
