We need to know what you are wanting to do with the truck.

Is the main underdash harness the one for the 1985, or is it the one out of the 1991?

The main harness is drastically different between the two years. You should use the complete 1985 harness, and 1985 dash assembly in your new cab. Otherwise dozens of wiring problems are going to surface.

The Dome/map/cargo lamp harness from the bottom of the "B" pillar up the back of the cab to the lights is the same, 1980-1991.

There should be a three wire connector behind the seat at the bottom of the "B' pillar.

The harness that goes from the three wire connector at the "B" pillar, and seat belt buckle switch, that travels under the sill plate to the front of the cab needs to match the year of the main underdash harness. So if you are using 1985 wiring, you need to use the wiring for the 1985 from the three wire connector at the back "B" pillar to the "A" pillar in front.

Hope this helps.

Hi
Thanks for the reply.
I just want the dome and cargo light to work
I sure the idiot used the 85 wiring
The dome light wiring appears to be from the 91
It has a connector for the seat belts ? 3 prong kind of oval.which the 85 didn't have and is still connected at the dome light

Get a small battery charger. Hook the ground to the sheetmetal of the cab, and touch the + of the battery charger to the black/lightblue wire going to the dome light wiring. The dome lights should come on.

If you have map lights also, they are fed on a lightgreen/yellow wire. Hook the + of the battery charger to this wire, and then switch on the map light switches, they should work.

The cargo lamp is fed by a black/pink wire. Hook your + to the black/pink and see if the cargo light lights up.

I looked it up, the 85 uses the same color wires. So cut the plugs and hook the wires up color for color and see what happens. There is a diode somewhere in the circuit, so the doors will turn on the dome light but not the cargo light, and the headlight switch will turn on the dome lights AND the cargo light. See how it all works when you hook it up.

The Three prong oval connector at the bottom of the "B" pillar driver's side is the same 1980-1991. So is the Cargo light and dome map lighting from the 3 prong oval wire plug to the lights themselves. So is the seat belt buckle one wire switch connector. The only difference between the 1991 and the 1985 is the connectors at the front of the "A" pillar.

All you need to do is unplug the 1991 harness there at that 3 prong oval wire connector at the back, and plug in a harness from a 1980-1986 in it's place that runs from the 3 prong oval connector to the front connectors (that runs under the sill plate). You shouldn't have to cut any wires.

Your 1985 cab should have had that short harness that runs from the "A" pillar to the "B" pillar in back. Every truck had one installed from the factory. If you still have access to the old cab, it might still be there.

Trying to save you from having to cut and splice wires when all you need is the correct short harness that will plug and play.

The harness can be found in any 1980-1986 at the wrecking yard. Every 1980-1986 pickup was wired for the dome/map/cargo lights up to the 3 prong connector at the "B" pillar. I even have one floating around here somewhere from my 1981; when I changed the harness out for the one for the bronco because it has the rear speaker wires etc...

You can replace the Dome/Map light assymbly with a regular dome light. They both bolt up the same. You should be able to find one of those at the wreckers as well. Or find a dome/map light assymbly unit that isn't pitted. Again 1980-1991 will work for the dome/map assymbly and look period correct. 1992-1996 will also work etc...

1980-1996 F-series / 1983-early 90's Ranger pickups for the regular dome light housing etc...
