Synthetic oil for my '86 6.9 Turbo diesel?

Well... I'm going to be changing my oil fairly soon, and I want to go synthetic... partly because of the extreme cold in Minnesota, and partly because I don't run natural oil in anything except my Jeep. (If you saw it, you'd understand the exception XD) Anywho, I saw a big jug of Shell Rotella T6 at Walmart, 5w40 Full synthetic I was originally considering, especially at only $20/gal. However, reading a few posts on here quickly disuaded me from using Rotella... So... What is the best synthetic to use in these trucks? I will go with the Motorcraft stuff if I have to... but they only sell it in quarts, or 55 gallon drums >_> And, I haven't priced that out yet... Also, there seems to be some debate about using a powerstroke filter as well? Why would I want to do so over a good quality OEM-style filter, such as WIX, or K&N? Thanks!

Just regular Mobil 1 Full synthetic? Hell, I sell that at work, and get a 10% discount

I was in Walmart picking up some oil for an oil change and they had Rotella synthetic blend on sale for the same price as the regular stuff. So I said why not it has to be a little better than regular rotella or Delo. Boy was I wrong. When I'm pulling hard it sounds like the valves start rattling. I'm going to run it long enough to get it good and dirty and change my oil again.
