Advice on a code reader/scanner

Looking for a recomendation for a code reader that will read my 1997 f-150 ,2003 explorer and new cars / light gas trucks.

I need one that reads Transmission , ABS, and normal codes.

I would like to buy online..maybe ebay and keep it under $ 200.00 Bucks

I found a few but have no idea what brand is good better or worse.

Any Advice would be Great.

Thanks,
Justin

This site has saved me thounsands in repair bills .....thanks agian.

I have not check in a while but doubt you will find a scanner in that price range that will read ABS codes.
A good scanner in that range will read transmission codes normally set by the PCM.
If you look at a code list for Ford it will show many codes for the transmission in the 700 range.
Also it should be able to see live data and be able to do a trap function when a fault occurrs.
When the inexperienced looks for a scanner it doesn't tell him a lot of specific info on the box to be able to recognize all the attributes it has or does not have.
For 97 -03 it's OBDII. From 04 up is the CAN system.
Look for a unit that can read both systems if possible but you need OBDII for 97-03 year range.
I have one marketed by SEARS in the $180 range.
It's made by a well known mfger and has done all I need it to do for OBDII.
ABS is a seperate system unrelated to the engine PCM so you can't read B, C or U codes out of the PCM with any scanner.
To get a feel for the OBDII codes go to the Superchips website and down load their list for FORD DTC Reader Instructions if it's still available.
It's about 10 8x11 pages with several thousand codes for P, B, C and U codes.
Once you get a scanner get a good Ford service disc to go with it.
On that disc should be most all the codes, data limits etc.
Good luck.
