Engine refresh question

I have a 94 F150 w/ 230,000 on the original 302 (roller) engine. Running good, but has to go sometime. What yr long block used engines can I swap in w/no problems, or whole engines compatible w/my electronics, etc? Not looking for more power but not less. I have a good source of used pickup engines. Or, should I just buy a Jasper? I'm keeping this truck long term.
Tks for any input!

All 302 or 5liters will bolt in place and be able to use your truck intake, distributor, and all wiring. Even if you use a non roller engine.

Personally I'd find a great running explorer motor and plop that in there. You just need different manifolds to clear the sparkplug angle (unless you find a 95)

Or go to junkyard or pick-n-pull and find a 351 to swap in. If you have mass air then you don't need tuning or a different computer. Just need engine and intake and ypipe. All your wiring will work on it.

TKS! With all going on emissions etc, been a long time since I had my ear to the ground on what will fit/work w/ what, same compression, etc. I don't tow, so power is enough. Mileage more important, maybe make a cam change when I do this. Also have shorty headers to use then. If I left the induction on the new engine, is there an advantage to using something newer than mine? (W/o lots of problems to sort out.)

If your truck has mass air...
Older engine will run fine
Same year motor will run the same
Newer 5liter will run well
5liter with cam will be great
302 stroker will run pretty good
Stock 351 will run like a stock 351
351 with a cam will run just as well
351 stroker will be an awesome upgrade and run pretty good also.

All the 302s and 351w will bolt in and use the same 94 acessories. The only difference you have is the flywheel/flexplate and front timing cover. The foxbody mustang and trucks vans and heavy cars have same timing cover. The 94-95 mustang and 89-93 tbird/couger have a thinner timing cover and then the explorers have an even thinner one.
Very minor work to be done to have a different motor in your truck.

The differences between 302 and 351 is lower intake width and upper to lower port shape.
Head bolts are bigger on 351 but heads are identical otherwise.

If you have the exhaust shop bend you new headpipes, you can even use your 302 headers on the 351, but you'll have like a hybrid exhaust setup and basically only fit what you have it on. Kinda like when someone uses mustang headers on their truck.

Let's do it. Ask questions and lets start looking for a motor.
Or let's do a motor swap. Find a truck or an expedition and swap in a 5.4 and 4r100 or something cool. Find a navigator dohc 5.4 or v10.....

Looks like I have a few options, & seems like you are ON IT! Fuel mileage takes precedent over power, so I'll probably stay w/ a 302. Yeah, mass air. Is there a ford stock cam or A/M you'd suggest ? I ought to keep quiet, but I'll chance it- truck has 233.000 on it now, no smoke/no noise. Burns about a quart in 3,000 mi. Don't know how long they go, but this is a work/pleasure truck & I want to be ready if it takes a crap.

If you use an explorer engine it's fairly nice upgrade. Cam and heads are better then the stock ones. You "can" use the explorer intake also if you are a little creative with throttle cable.

I can't think of cam right now but conanski has two that he recommends (and has used) and while I have not used either, I like the specs a lot and will be using one in my truck soon (or bigger)
We will get into that later though. Find a good motor and we will start from scratch.
Even if you don't swap the cam, you can use 1.7 pedistal mount roller rockers for a little lift improvement.

A '94+ truck motor will be a direct replacement as would a 5.0HO but that won't get as good milage in a truck because you will find an excuse to use the extra power. These later truck motors actually got the same cam as the Explorer and it's a pretty decent RV grind just a little short on total valve life so 1.7 rockers are a good idea.

Tks for the replies. Obama is making sure my foot is connected to my wallet on mileage. I'm 66, & my hotrod days are over. Current engine never sees over 2500 rpms.
Problem is going to be finding a low mileage engine in the year range for an easy swap.
