i'd like my hood to open further....how to?

i installed my hood today and used the factory hindges etc...

i'm sure it opens as ford intended, but i'd like it to open alittle more. It apprears that the spring loaded hindge has some stop built in. removing alittle of them might allow to open up more, anyone done this?

My concern would be that the stop as designed was probably kept at that angle to avoid the arm binding up if it went further than intended.

You also may try disengaging the spring arms and see if the pivot hinges even allow for further travel.

The springs are also what make the hood retract and sit in the proper position. An incorrect amount of coils in the springs may alter that affect.

This is a pet peeve of mine too. Those springs need to function as is, but a member here (I don't remember who) added an extension to the mounting tab on the hood with good results....I'm going to try that.
Currently I have some quick release pins in the springs that I pull out and then prop the hood higher with a stick. Kind of a pain though.

Many have used the forward reverse tilting hood kit.

i'm surprised with all the knowledge on this board someones not got a modification all figured out. maybe there isnt............

i'm gonna look for another set of hindges (thanks 48 metal) and try a couple ideas i have.

1. cut and lengthen the part of spring hindge that connects to the hood.

2. modify stop that limits hindge from open more.

edit; i check my garage don't have another set.

Wanted: 51/52 hood hindge set with springs (maybe 48 - 50, i'm not positive they are the same)..... PM me if you know of or have some.....thanks Gregg

I've always wanted to try that. Will the hood go completely vertical with the springs disconnected? Hate to lose my hood adjustment when pulling an engine. Tired of knocking my head on the hood pin and safety catch, too.

The spring tension positions the rear of the hood...so if you modify the spring, you will need to realign the hood.

No, but it will open up about 2 feet higher without the springs hooked up. Sure makes it easier to work under there. I doubt you could pull the engine....and why would you lose adjustment if you remove the hood from the hinges?

I also suggest the forward hood tilt system. However, if you want to keep the original setup, I would be careful in the modifications. Over the years, I have read too many comments from frustrated owners that can't get there stock set up to work correctly. If yours is opening and closing correctly, it might be a good idea to just leave it alone. Too many people have had to do the Ford two step by walking around to both rear corners of their hood and pushing them down to get the hood shut all the way. Has anybody out there successfully altered the hinges and maintained the correct one-step hood close? Or are you all two steppers? Jag

I installed my hinges minus the springs. I use a prop rod to keep it open, and it does give more room than stock set up.

I don't need to do the two step either. The hood functions as it should, and the alignment is good all around.

That old rust bucket F-5 of mine had the spring pins disconnected when I got it. The PO had released them in order to get enough room to successfully pull the flathead without actually removing the hood. It will go much higher, but not completely vertical with the spring pins disconnected.
