My friend's truck died. Help please.

1996 7.3 auto. He was driving and the truck quit and immediately caught again at one stop light, a few blocks later it just died.
We loosened the fuel filter lid and drained some fuel, it was yellow and looked like it had water in it. Refilled the bowl with fresh diesel and the engine tries to kick occasionally but won't start. Replaced fuel filter, crank sensor, charged and jumped batteries, still tries when we first crank it and occasionally during cranking, but no start.

The truck was just recently pulled from two years storage, but ran for several hours prior to this issue. No blown fuses. No WIF light.

Has glow light and oil pressure comes up half of gauge during cranking. Tach bounces. Removed fuel filter lid and bowl fills during cranking (still yellow, but it was running before)

Could you guys point me to something to check please?

Thanks. I have an IDI and it doesn't have all the bells and whistles this one has.

Do you get any smoke out the tail pipe. I would put some power service in the tank or even drain the tank. You may also clean the fpr screen on the drivers side of the fuel bowl. It could have some junk on it.

Thanks for the reply, Stainless.

There are puffs of black smoke when it tries to fire and white smoke otherwise. I read up on cleaning the FPR screen and will head out with some q-tips in the morning. I do have some diesel kleen with me in my truck and will put a little in the fuel filter bowl.

Thanks again!

How the oil level in the hpop and crank case?

I'd change the oil and filter to ensure it was full and new.

No problem. To really clean it good it is best to take the whole regulator of the side and pop that lil screen out. It is not a hard job, just two bolts that hold it on. Good luck and let us know if it does the trick or not. Welcome to fte!

Oil in crankcase is good but didn't check in HPOP. I'll check it tomorrow and pull the regulator off. My IDI lets me know when the oil is low by rattling like a freight train, I guess it's gotten a bit more involved since the early nineties!

What is a good way of draining the fuel tanks without pulling them?

Garden hose through filler neck, or hand pump, or electric pump through filler necks.

7.3 will let you know on low oil, by running bad or not at all.

If you search for 7.3 fpr clean writeup I've got it listed on several sites.

Thanks Glovemeister, I'll do some searching to see what the garden hose FPR thing is all about.

Edit: I missed that the garden hose thing was for draining the fuel tanks. Duh. That was a lot of searching!

I printed out the PDF on cleaning the 6.0 and 7.3 FPR screens. Thanks!

Will check back in with the results but I suspect the screen will be clogged due to the nasty fuel.

If its been stored that long maybe you should check the air filter box to see if a mouse made a home in there. Look to see if any wires have been chewed on. Don't ask me how I know, LOL.

He switched the relays around under the hood today and the truck started right up. Since it sat for a while with the hood up I'm guessing there was some corrosion.

Thanks for the help, guys!
