Broke both dis. cap bolts!

Doing a complete tune up on my '94 F150 4x4, Straight 6, 5 speed, and the cap and rotor are original, and since the bolts haven't been touched in almost 20 years, they were seized solid, and both broke off. Great.

So now I have to remove the whole distributor to drill those out, and re-tread it.

So heres what I wanna know, how do you pull out the whole distributor assembly?

I tryed and it doesn't wanna come out, can't remember if there something holding it in or not, and before breaking anything else.... figured I'd ask.

I did it on my truck also. Cover the guts of the distributor so you dont get metal in there. Drill through the bolts and threads and put some small machine screws in there with a nut and some blue loctite. Thats the easiest way and secure.

Or, if youd like to pull the dizzy you can do it that way too.

STOP!

"Before removing the old distributor, you will need to scribe two marks which will help you install the new distributor with the same orientation. One mark should be made to match the distributor housing (outside body) to the engine mounting point. Pick a point on the outside of the distributor housing that is accessible and that you can reproduce (in the same spot) on the new distributor. The second mark should be made on the inside of the distributor housing to indicate the position of the rotor within the distributor. Think of the rotor as the hour hand of a clock. The rotor on the new distributor will need to be in the same position when you install it. This is important, since if you do not mark these points properly, you probably will not be able to start the engine with the new distributor installed."

ok.you can continue now.

It should just pull out.
Soak it with wd or something, and let it sit, it most likely is also seized on.

I fully agree with this guy. On top of that I would also put the engine on TDC. Just in case...

Well I drilled the old bolts out, but one I drilled abit at an angle and the end broke off, I rebuilt it with JB weld, see if it holds tomorrow when I re-install the cap with new screws, if not, I'll have to pull the whole thing out and get a used one from a scrap yard.

Well I got 'er running, and running nice and smooth!

I retreaded one side, and put a screw there, and put 2 zip ties to hold the other side, and works great!

I did play with the rotor, but I did mark it before playing with it, but I am going to put my timing light on it to make sure everything is ok.

Now I remember reading something about that famous "6 Liter" tune up, and something in that, was to advance the timing abit, to gain abit of mpg and power.

Anyone know what the timing advance degree is?
