93 tranny slipping BAD...

Hey guys I haven't posted in here before, I've been in the 7.3 ps forum for a good while but we are now having a major issue with my mom's 93. It's a 2 wheel drive 150 302 auto (e4od I assume?) and today it started 'slipping' really bad. If you just put it in drive it won't shift out of first but if you start in first and shift manually it will go into second but when it hits third it just spins like it's in neutral, no drive pressure at all. Our local mechanic, who's actually pretty good, said it acts like the solenoids are bad or acting up (sorry I have a ZF6, haven't had an auto in a long time so don't know a lot about them). Does this sound right? If so is it something we can change out at home or does it take a tranny shop to crack the case open? The fluid gets changed regularly and isn't burnt, the tranny had a 'tune-up' last year sometime but otherwise hasn't actually been rebuilt before. Thanks for any help, it'd be a big help if they don't have to spend a lot of money at a shop.

It could be a code T (AOD) which requires that the TV cable is correctly adjusted and not broken or disconnected, if this cable isn't set right or is disconnected then the trans will slip badly and will self destruct very quickly. If on the other hand you have a code U(4R70w) or code E(E4OD) then the first thing to do is pull codes and fix anything and everything that comes up, both these transmissions are computer controlled and all sensor problems will affect trans operation, and particularly anything related to the VSS, TPS, and MLPS. If it still slips after fixing any sensor issues then there is nothing to do except have it rebuilt.
