Pretty cool piece of gearhead nostalgia. 
I don't know about it being a test piece, that sounds like some old guy's story. It's very common for those old aluminum FE intakes to have no numbers on them. Most of them do have a date code, though, right by the water neck, which would give an idea if it was from 1962 or the 406 era. It definitely is what would have come on a factory dual quad 406, and the price is about fair money.
