1973 P400 (bread truck)

I have an old bread truck. 1973 p400

I am trying to find a clutch assembly for it and i was told advanced auto would have it. when i checked with them the only P series truck they have is the p350. I was told the p350 clutch assembly should work with it but i am hesitant. please advise before i purchase this item please.

my VIN #: P40BVS35337
TRANS A
AXLE 28A
WB 154
DSO 870852
AM1 83-72092473

I need more information on my truck please so i may get the correct parts. if anyone has a link or part number from autozone, napa, or advanced auto or another place please help me out. thanks.

i would expect that you could easily find your engine/transmission combination in a pickup or econoline, and have no trouble at all finding the clutch for that application.
if this isn't your daily driver, i would suggest taking it apart now, identify the size of the clutch, and use that info to verify that you're looking at the right parts. most parts stores will machine flywheels in house, so thats a good excuse to have it in the store and double check that everything lines up

You might want to sign up & ask on this extraordinary 57 page thread on step vans, that's within a hot rod forum:

vintage step van post - Page 57 - THE H.A.M.B.

It has essentially become a step van forum unto itself & has many knowledgeable contributors.

Also note, in some instances the same flywheel & pressure plate can be used with different diameter clutch discs.

If you can't tear it down before you order the parts. If you can afford it, you could pick up one of each the 10" and 11" clutch kits. Then just return the one you don't use. Not the best situation but it's a way to make sure you've got the one you need before you tear the van down.

if it happens that you can't afford to buy both kits now, you could ORDER them both at your local parts store, and when you bring in your flywheel to get resurfaced, you then get to open both kits you ordered and pick one.
and for the buy two return one method, i use that all the time. the parts guys understand, you can't pay your mechanic to run errands all day to get the wrong parts, so you have both options and you're sure you're good to go.
