rear suspension questions

Alright, I'm new to trucks, and to anything with leaf springs, so here it goes.

That top set of leaf springs, were they added after the manufacture of the truck for towing? The bed is pretty stiff, and I was thinking if I took them off it might soften the ride up a bit. Also, I have these connected to the rear axle

I'm assuming these do the same thing as an actual swaybar. I have no idea how they actually work and do not know how to check to see if they're in good working order. If they're still working and doing their job, I'll keep them, but to me it looks like a box with some springs or something inside, with a bar coming out that has a chain which is connected to the axle housing.....

Interesting...It's some sort of spring loaded sway bar.. here's some background info from the US Trademark Office. The wordmark was abandoned around 1988. The company is still in business and does powdercoating in Sparks, NV:

SWAY/LOK - Reviews & Brand Information - Garate Enterprises, Inc. Sparks , - Serial Number: 73245008
Trademarks of Garate Enterprises, Inc. (1 trademarks)

I'd be interested in how it was engineered and the principles of how it would have worked. Can ya post a pic of the system from the front side?

once I can afford it I'll yank 'em and put a real sway bar on.....dont know how long those things will last if theyre even still good....I can always look at a real sway bar and see if its good
