Project: 4Spd thread

Well, I bit the bullet and picked up a T19. Came out of an 85 F350 2wd with a 460. It's a 5:1 first gear. Of course, the salvage yard cut the shifter.

Came with the aluminum bell as well. I figured I'd start a project log for the swap. Going in my F100

This thing is monstrously heavy.

Granny gear 4 spd. Gearing down the rear end should give the same end result.

They only cut the shifter? The trannies from the local yard come with torched off drive-shaft stubs too! And a cut crossmember!

The shifter shouldn't be too hard to find, I believe it's the same as the earlier t18 shifter.

For a short time I had an NP435 in my truck after converting from auto, but then swapped for a close-ratio T19, 4:1 low gear.
For me (very hilly area), it was a HUGE improvement over a granny low trans because it eliminated the big jumps between gears, giving four, fully usable ratios.

There are different T18/19 shifters, with shorter & longer fingers below the ball.
Novak Conversions have new replacements in both types, but with some 5/8" rod, your shifter can be repaired.

Well, was at it today.

Here's the donor truck.

79 F350 2wd with a 400. Holy beast this truck is...

I may as well post questions as I go along.

1.

What is this box?

That's the harness going into it.

2.

This OMG two piece driveshaft.. How does it come apart in the center? Was quite comical driving home with it hanging out the windows of my car.

3.

This F350 uses this cross member with the 400.

My F100 has this currently with the 460.. the straight across unit.

Which one do I use? (of course, my F100 frame is no drilled at all for that gullwing style crossmember.

4. Do these trucks have a clutch interlock switch at all, so you can't start the truck without the clutch pedal pressed?

Came from an 85 F350 2wd with a 460. That should help your search.

That T19 you have is setup for a two piece driveshaft, I don't think there is any way to convert it to use a one piece. I hate to say it, but I think your going to be stuck building or modifying a crossmember to mount that carrier bearing.

There weren't any clutch interrupt switches on these trucks! If you want you can wire one up using the old neutral safety switch.

And yes, the drive-shaft should come apart in the middle, the whole slip yoke should slide off. Just mark it with a piece of chalk so it goes back together on in exactly the same spot.

I figured I was stuck with the two piece setup, I can get the bracket from the frame of the donor truck.. I am mainly concerned with the crossmember for the transmission.

I'll yank on it harder, I suppose. It wouldn't come apart at the 'yard'.

Well, I got everything else this past weekend.

Landed a T18 shifter which doesn't fit into my T19.. but at least I can make a shifter now if I can't find a direct fit. What a grease pile this truck was... ugh.

You wont need the 2-piece d-shaft with a short bed, but because of the bolt on yoke on the trans you'll need a d-shaft with a stub and slip yoke to install/remove it,

what size u-joints are you running most 2wd f350's have a 1350 series joint... might have to change yoke on the rear end,or use a combo u-joint but I'm not very fond of those.

Honestly, no idea what I am running currently. I think 1330s, but not sure. Driveshaft was going to be last.. bolt it all together, measure it, then get a shaft built.

Well.. the "actual" Hurst boots get $100 + from the eBay vendors... since they are long discontinued.

I created a clone with a $12 Spectre boot, and a "H" vinyl decal from a friend with a vinyl machine.
