VOLVO heads on a FORD engine? (4V)

I just read an article about Volvo (Porche designed) 4V head conversions to slap on Ford 2.3 - 2.5 L engines. Any comments welcome, with my strange interests and a wire-feed this could become do-able

The head in question comes out of a 740i

Among other mods it calls for adding an OIL-FEED line

The curious part of it is the valve timing itself. 4V's can be set up to act like a super or turbo charged engine, even though normally aspirated. 137% VE is considered the max

*VE = Volumetric Efficiency

In other words it can "SWALLOW" more air and fuel than a normal engine if it's set up right...
(at a specific RPM range)

I can well imagine that porting, and modified valves also come into play

I HAVE a 2.3 standing by - and I have been looking for something like this exploit. I don't think ford ever made a 4V head for these - or if it did - the price is sky high from Ford Racing

are they talking about the 2.3 duratec engine found in the earlier focus(and maybe the ranger, not sure about that) or the older 2.3 found in pintos/mustang 2's and other older fords? The engines are not the same.

It's the older 2.3 Pinto engine. The Volvo head is an interesting mod, it's a lot of work and requires a bit of custom fabbing, but can be worth it. I thought about it, but I'm not thrilled with the sound of a four cylinder, for the work involved a nasty Datsun or Toyota six or small V8 can usually be dropped in.

There is a guy local here that put a Volvo DOHC head on a 2.3. I think he did get it running but I don't recall what happened after that.

The article I read was on the Jalopy Journal threads - but it seemed realistic to do that without getting buried too deep in expense.

Old time hotrod ways always attracted me, and if it can be done "DIRTY BUT CHEAP" I'm all into that, as you know...

My Poppa was an aircraft engineer, and he SWORE that four cylinder engines had a harmonic that made them more powerful than anything made before or since.

(This from a man who collected a 1936 Cord Beverly)

I'm assuming you've seen this site:
MerkurTech.com
There is more actual info out there, and lots of talk in forums. Most people also talk about adding a turbo, but after having a Subaru EA82T, I'm off turbo gas engines probably for good. I'm more into turbodiesels now, even n/a diesels, I just love the torque over the lag and go action of a turbo gasser.

The thing that gets me is actual "NON-ASPIRATED" power - at this point I am researching. Thanx for any input at all

MERKURTECH is one of the pages I looked at, yes

Any method of turbocharging is a good way to blow un-prepped rings

For any kind of super-charging you have to have a strong main section

I'm thinking....

Never build anything without seeing all the way down the line!

i remember that there used to be a site of a guy with a fox body that followed his whole buildup, mostly from junkyard scrounging and ingenuity. a want to say that he was building a 2.3 with the volvo 2.3 DOHC head, along with a turbo off a cummins or something, I don't really think it took that much to do though. really cool site, sure wish i could find it now, that was about 7 years ago

It doesn't have to stay a 2.3 either. If I do a main section on it - I should be looking to max that out too.

*Just thinking again

Are you sure it wasn't a Merkur?
