Fuel filter change question

I have a 2000 F350 SD with the 7.3 and have changed the fuel filter many times in the ten years I have owner her. Today I am changing the fuel filter, pulled the old one out, and opened the yellow valve in the back to drain the fuel out of the bowl and nothing happened. The fuel is just sitting there with me opening and closing the valve. I can see a couple little bubbles when I do that but the fuel does not run out. Is it possible to use heavy paper towels to clean out the old fuel and use an air nozzle on the hose end under the truck to blow what ever is in there blocking the tube out? Any suggestions would be great, Thanks, Danny

fuel filter

why not just use a syringe and suck out the fuel. or just slowly install the new one and it shouldn't run over. . . i opened my fuel bowl drain and i had fuel leaks galore. any way when i change mine i just take the old out slowly and slowly put the new in..

You've probably got something that's stopped up the drain line. My wife's did that. I took some electric fence wire and ran it up the drain hose from the bottom side to clear the obstruction.

Didn't really feel it, but I did it with the drain valve open and stopped poking around when fuel started coming out. I then left the drain open and turned the key on for a few seconds to blow the rest of the stuff out of the line.

I do like the idea of running wire up the tube until fuel starts running out. I think I will do that and will see what happens. Thank you!

Dumb question, when you drain the bowl where does the fuel go? Last time I didn't drain the bowl, I swapped filters out and primed it a few times. Was that wrong?

Believe it or not, I've seen that tube get clogged by yellow jackets or mud wasps building a nest in the tube.

I put a rubber hose extension on mine so when I drain it, it will not splash all over my front axle. I thought that was plugged but I took it off and still a no go. I took a wire to poke up the tube, and it worked great. Thank you for the help everyone!

The o-rings may be breaking down and it could be time to do a fuel bowl overhaul.

By doing that, I think that you have the potential to allow stuff into the injectors. For example, u have some fine sediment on the filter element that gets washed loose when u pulled the old one out. When you push the new one in, it has the potential to get into what would have been the filtered fuel and sent through your injectors.

A lot of folks drain it down and wash the bowl out to wash everything out.
I have also done it that way as well.

That is just my opinion above but that is what I could see happening.

I was just going to suggest the bees. I had some busses coming from Ga. to Delaware. And they would stop around Whitesville, Va. could not get the fuel cap off with that much suction on the fuel tank. We used to carry a car antenna after that to push up the vent hose.
